This is why Andy Ruiz Jr is Mexico's first heavyweight champion

A lot of confusion here about Andy.

So, let's talk about it because the Americans are quick to claim him.

He's a Mexican that was born in California, but bounced back and forth between Imperial Valley and Mexicali.

Antonio Margarito was born in Torrance California. Does that make him a Mexican American?

Mauricio Herrera was born in the U.S., but very Mexican and people would hardly consider him an American...fights for the Mexican flag...period.

Americans deployed in the military have kids in South Korea, Germany, etc that are active duty...are their kids Korean, German?

Andy was born in California, but speaks fluent Spanish and is different then Oscar De La Hoya, Fernando Vargas, Benavidez, because he had strong ties to Mexico. Bounced back and forth between I.V. and Mexicali and trained in Mexico, and even competed as a member of the Mexican Olympic team.

The President of Mexico himself gave a congratulatory message to Andy yesterday. Why? Because he's Mexican.

People are confused because Andy is fluent in English so naturally they think ...AMURICA!

Your birth place doesn't tell the whole story, especially for all those Mexican kids from the border towns where they cross back and forth for school, and family ties.

My last sig can also be added on to that but mainly the fact that both his parents were born in Mexico automatically confirms he is Mexican via said country's laws

If Chris Arreola would have gotten a belt, Mexican media wouldn't give a damn. Just a note on the sports page. Arreola doesn't have the same ties that Andy does.

Andy has turned into a media darling in Mexico now and they can't stop talking about his accomplishment. Andy will probably be invited to show off his belts soon.

At first when the Joshua fight was announced, I thought he was using Mexico (His heritage) to sell himself, then I saw a documentary on him, where he went to school in Mexicali, box in the national Mexican Team, got bullied for his weight etc. Obviously he was born in America like Margarito and Cotto but no one questioned those two in the same way with Ruiz. Then I saw his interview with one of the LDBC guys when he signed for PBC and he was talking about becoming the first Mexican HW. I just concluded that this guy wasn’t using Mexico at all, he was Mexican at heart.

Technically yes. A lot of countries have this rule. Antonio Margarito technically is an American. So is Mauricio Herrera...and Miguel Cotto lol. So are Chinese babies, where their mothers fly in to have an "American" baby.

If you Lopez Boxing guy go to say Argentina and have a baby in Argentina then leave for the U.S. with the baby right after and never go back...is that baby Argentinean or American? Probably American right?

However, if your baby stays in Argentina, and flys back and forth between Argentina and the U.S. and decides to fight in the Olympics for Argentina...is the kid Argentinean of American? Sounds like a dual national who might end up loving Argentina just a bit more...which is ok since he's also Argentinean.

Your birth place isn't the whole story. Lots of people are born in random countries their parents were working in at the time but move back home.

In this case, because I.V. and Mexicali are a giant international city where most people share dual nationalities, it's easy to get confused.

I have a close friend from Mexicali who I talked to about this after the fight and a lot of kids go to high school and were born in the U.S. but live their lives at home, with their parents and just cross the border every morning.
