It is weird... I got Greek family in NYC - Queens - and it's like they cling to their heritage even when the shit they're clinging to has moved on in the motherland. Like they're trying to be more Greek than actual Greek citizens and I've heard similar from Italians I've met too. Dunno, I'm not gonna pretend I got a real explanation for it but I just found it interesting.

Who's going to tell Ruiz he isn't Mexican because billeau2 on Boxingscene said so?

Ruiz is Mexican. I do not need to see his driver's lisence to see that... seriously, he looks like every other dude working at Burger King. He just happens to speak English.

              You can't prove that.

All the family of Andy are from Mexicali, B.C.

Thats the reason why he represented Mexicali in his uniform in a lot of fights.

Andy is 100% mexican, all they world knows this.
Dude. I am so happy for you. Seriously, my heart went out to all the Mexicans I know - in person, in passing, on-line. That shyt was amazing. Before Canelo (who doesn't really count as a Mexican) I don't think there's been a single meaningful Mexican north of Welterweight. Was Galindez one of your boys?

Anyway, you guys finally have a Heavyweight! And it's not a counterfeit Mexican, like Sal Sanchez and Canelo Alvarez, or Napoles... it's a bona fide, big sloppy ethnic Mexican.

This is a great time to be alive. I don't think I have ever loved Boxing more than I do now, thanks to Ruiz.

Remember when Cain won the Heavyweight belt? That was amazing, too.

Andy Ruiz is whatever he wants to be. It doesn’t matter who wants to claim him, he is from whatever culture he identifies with. Whatever he grew up on. If that was the Mexican culture, then that’s what he is.

Funny bring up Greeks in a post about Mexicans. A buddy of mine is married to a Greek girl. I was actually pretty friendly with them all back in High School. The girl's father at his diner had all sorts of Greek shyt, naturally. One of the decorations was a massive poster of Sal Sanchez. This was the early 90's, so Sanchez had kinda faded from public consciousness even in Boxing-friendly New Jersey. I didn't know it was a poster of a Mexican, myself, until they told me.

His kids would call him out on it not being a Greek, but a dude who looked Greek. But his defense, I shyt you not, was that many Greek men would have been Boxing champions but had been killed over the last 100 years. So it was OK to have a poster of a guy who looked like a Greek champion would have. Then he explained that all the population centers across the Mediterranean were founded by Greeks. So Spanish people were Greeks, but they got "soft" over the centuries and forgot their heritage.

This was all explained straight-faced. His view on how Michael Dukakis would have handled *********s was pretty awesome, too.

Greek men... Sounds a lot like my old man - they gets these funny ideas but they're damn unshakable in their beliefs.

Canelo doesn’t count as a Mexican?

                      He’s 100% pure Mexican lol.

You mean because he has white skin, auburn hair? Lol he was born and raised in Mexico, first language is Spanish, and the culture he identifies with is the Mexican culture.

Mexico is not a race, it’s a nationality. Of course Canelo’s dna would likely come up as mostly European, north of 90% probably, but that does not matter. My dna results came up mostly European from Spain/Portugal, but i’m not gonna go around claiming i’m Spaniard/European/white.
