Do some people not realise there's lots of ways of quitting.

There's 'quitting' like a ***** like Khan trying to get a win by DQ because he was being systematically battered and outboxed by Crawford.

There's 'quitting' like Golota or Tyson by turning into a psychopath.

There's 'quitting' like Rigondeaux/Walters v Loma when you're just totally bewildered and literally think '**** this', and give up.

There's 'quitting' like Kell Brook who couldn't see where or how many Spences or GGGs were in front of him because his eye sockets were smashed.

There's 'quitting' like Joshua who had no clue where he was or what he was supposed to be doing because he was concussed by Ruiz.

I think it's a little harsh to judge them all by the same measure.

AJ never once shook his head, or say no, or say "I quit". He nodded his head every time the ref asked him if he could box on. Having his hand on the ropes does not equal quitting.

And I didn't hear the ref tell AJ to walk towards him though I may be wrong on that.

        Where exactly did he "quit"????
It's because after the first knockdown in the seventh round; The video evidence strongly showed subtle signs that AJ wanted out of the fight by his mouthpiece hanging partly out of his mouth.

Then after the last knockdown the video evidence clearly showed that AJ had deliberately spit his mouthpiece out on the canvas. Which suggested to me at least and especially the referee that he was spent (tired), defeated and broken.

When he returned back to the corner after that fourth and final knockdown. He did not have his mouthpiece in his mouth, he looked over his shoulder at his corner and grabbed the top of the ropes with his gloves; Which was a clear indication to me and the referee that he didn't want to fight anymore.

Anthony Joshua basically looked for a way out. He found it and then tapped out!

Bingo! He deliberately spit out his mouthpiece on the canvas after that last knockdown which was a clear indication that he no longer wanted to fight anymore and the referee caught that.

I'm still not clear on if he quit or was just too out of it. He did respond in the affirmative he wanted to continue, but I couldn't tell if he was asked other questions or not & his hands on the ropes was just odd. Generally you put your hands up when you want to continue.

So idk if he quit or not, but I'm more leaning towards he was just out of it. Guy got dropped 4 times ffs & at times it probably seemed to him like Ruiz had a extra f#cking arm cuz of his quickness. Even if Joshua's mind & heart wanted to go on his body quit on him.

He did quit, he knew he had nothing left.

Ruiz would have finished him brutally if he carried on.

I forgot to add when he got up, instead of listening to the ref he turned around and walked to his corner. Basically he called another time out like the Parker fight. It was 20 seconds from the knockdown until the ref waved it off.

Good post. All quitting isn't equal.

And personnally I don't even view quitting as bad if its decided more or less. I don't need to see a mfer unconscious on the ground to know he lost. And this fight was over already if Joshua quit or not.

I was starting to not believe my own eyes and what I have seen multiple times, which is Joshua getting outboxed and dropped 4 times, then looking for a way out and expressing that clearly to the referee.
People are fanatical. They go through a lot to defend their fighter.

Agreed. As much as it's incredible to two warriors pushing themselves to within an inch of their lives, one thing I don't like in the boxing community is the stigma on 'quitting'.

Quitters who are getting pummelled or are suffering in the ring in some way, should not be shamed for quitting.

Who are we to judge if a fighter who risks his life every time he gets in the ring, sensibly gives a thought to his longer term health, his faculties, his ability to raise his children? They don't need to leave on a stretcher to prove anything.

And for those who disagree and say that a true fighter should never quit... What's that they say to them before the first bell? "Protect yourself at all times"...
