Why was Marquez such a nightmare for Pacquiao?

Pacquiao has fought and dominated counter-punchers like Bradley 3 times, Vargas, Broner, and many others throughout his career, so it's not like he can't deal with counter-punchers.

Marquez got schooled by Bradley, got beat on by Alvarado, and gets dropped and hurt all the time. Yet somehow he is able to give Manny more trouble than almost everyone in each of their 4 fights and even knocked him out.

What does Marquez do that troubles Manny so much and can Keith Thurman replicate it?

      1. Styles make fights
      2. Marquez is better at counter punching than all the fighters Pacquiao dominated
      3. Fantastic faints and perception of distance
      4. Tenacious and risks it for the win/really commits with his counters (look at his face in the last fight, he truely “earned” that I story)
      5. Solid fighter, one of Mexico’s best

No jab at JMM but Pac was outboxing him in every fight
Even when he got ko’d , up to that point he was winning fight
        Marquez was special fighter though

because even as a counter puncher JMM goes for the kill. plus his obsession with Pac was intense.

Pacquiao was just right for Marquez, he’s an all out aggressor presenting himself available to a counter puncher. The stance, the patience was all wrong for manny.

The only things that made it close fights and competitive are manny’s superior athletic gifts. And that’s not a knock on manny at all. He basically overcame his kryptonite twice out of four fights.

Fighting a style ur tailormade to begin with? And make them close fights? Who would’ve funk.

Pac and Freddie just could not figure out JMM's half step back traps .
Then again, you can also argue Pac was a nightmare for JMM.
His facial scars are mostly from Pac.
JMM was nailed countless times by that left hand when he backed-up.

I think Freddie should have taught Manny how to change the elevation of his head a lot more.
And Freddie is really not big on inside fighting. Pac could have used a lot more training in that department.
Then again, boxing refs today are dumb. They don't allow much inside fighting now like Carlos Padilla or Davey Pearl.

I thought Juan won the third fight HANDILY.
Pac's head was somewhere else that night.
