Does chicken-legs Wilder disprove the idea that punch power comes from the legs up?

You don’t understand it which is why you made this thread!

Wilder’s power and how he generates is unique to him!

He not only has the length but the speed and him sharpening up his shots by having them fired straight down the middle just adds to the damage along with his raw power!

People crap on his technique but that a beautiful 1-2 and we all should thank Breazeale’s lack of defense for demonstrating that Wilder can throw punches properly when he wants to!

I agree that these haters should step in the ring with him and let’s see how many come out afterwards and still call him a bum, birdlegs or no skills!

He is still planting his feet. He's still generating speed. He's still providing force.

The saying doesn't mean powerful legs are required. Otherwise you would get people strengthening their feet.

Tommy Hearns was a great example of this. Skinny legs meant he could carry more power - but that was in restricted weight classes. For a heavyweight, skipping leg day has no benefits.

It doesn't disprove anything. It's true the legs, hips and waist help the power of a punch and turning the body into the punch and the speed the punch travels at all contribute to the power. Wilder does use his thin legs to help power his punches. You don't need big legs to hit hard. Lots of thin legged boxers are murderous punchers. Tommy Hearns is a good example. A boxer with fast hands and a big upper body like Wilder who turns his shoulder into the punch can have tremendous power
even with thin legs. After all you punch with your arms not your legs. Fast punches with weight behind then equal power.

Glad to see someone else made the Hearns example before I did. The first time I saw wilder when he was a prospect I described him to my dad as looking like a heavyweight hearns

Also, Wilder’s bodytype being a 6’7 extomorph he’s going to have small legs. It doesn’t mean he doesn’t work them out, and it doesn’t mean they aren’t strong.

There are guys in the NBA with similar body types, and they can do a standing vertical leap at an insane height. That’s leg strength.

This is true. Wilder does use his legs to help his power and his great power is due to the speed and correct form of his punch and all the weight he puts in the punch with his big arms and shoulders. He throws the straight right like a giant Tommy Hearns.
