Wilder was just a local country boy from a small time in Alabama with no major network backing, promotional push or sponsorships. Therefore, he was an unknown commodity who fought most of his early career before 500 seat High school gymnasiums.

Moreover, it would of cost his local promoter a lot of money to get those fighters; Especially the European ones to fly to America to fight him, while paying for their hotel accommodations and expenses as well as their purses too. Unless they were willing fight him for $50 then I don't see how those match ups were even possible.

I'm pretty sure that whoever was his local promoter at the time didn't have the deep pockets of Matchroom Sport, Top Rank, Don King Promotions, Golden Boy promotions or MTK global to offer those fighters substantial monetary deals to fight Deontay Wilder.

Therefore, he was left to fight only the fighters that were available to him at the time in his region. Had he won the Gold medal back in 2008 like Joshua did in 2012 then his life would have changed for the better.

He would have had long lines of sponsorships, promoters and network backers just waiting in line to do business with him. So just give the man his credit and due.

He has come a long way since his early days of fighting in Tuscaloosa, Alabama.
I never said they were all time greats, I said that they were reputable names, guys he could have built his name and value with while getting paid into the bargain.

An Olympic bronze medal is nothing to sneeze at, especially considering his late start in the sport. Floyd got a bronze while Spence didn't even medal. Coupled with his back story and the fact he hits like a mule there was every chance to make a splash. I know that I was excited when he turned pro and I'm not even American.

As for promoters, wasn't he signed to Golden Boy? What happened there? And if you can't afford to bring the Euros over, get on a plane. Big punching Americans will always draw in Europe, particularly in the UK.

I do sympathise with the network situation; HBO basically killed the heavyweight division and Showtime went full Mayweather, but that's all the more reason to travel isn't it?

Thanks for the info. Is it not fair to say that Jennings was more of a known quantity at that stage?
I certainly don't recall any outrage or claims of ducking.

He fought once in the UK before winning the WBC strap, Knocking out Audley Harrison in 70 seconds. 5 months after that Price's career basically ended at the hands of Tony Tompson so no way were they putting David Price in the ring with Wilder who just gave former WBO Champ Sergei Liakhovich a ****ing seizure because he hit him so hard.

          And yeah, **** the networks.

I remember the Harrison fight. Wilder did great, but we have to balance that with Harrison having been a proven bust.

Fair enough about Price, but could he not have fought Thompson instead?

After the two Price KO's, Thompson lost to Pulev, Takam, Malik Scott and Luis Ortiz. He was done, and would be picked off as a bad scalp on the resume.

No, he signed with Golden Boy after he became champion. Also, you say that he was a draw but no one knew who he was let alone knew that he could punch.

Also, where were all these offers from these top U.K. and European promoters for any of his services? There were none because Deontay was an unknown American Heavyweight fighter at the time.

He wasn't a Tyson, Foreman or Holyfield. He didn't start getting noticed until he started fighting on Showtime; Which was not long before his first title bout with Bermane Stiverne.

That wouldn't be a bad opportunity for Wilder at all. He could be the new Clubber Lang. Have Creed III be like Rocky III.
