Roach: Crawford Was Only Pacquiao Opponent Arum Mentioned
“The last time I talked to Arum,” Roach said, “he called me up and he told me that Crawford is the guy we’re trying to make and so forth. And he said, ‘You’re gonna have to fight him sooner or later. You might be better off fighting him now. What weight do you want?,’ and so forth. So I said, ‘If we do fight him, we’ll fight him at 47 [welterweight]. Bring him up in weight, maybe slow him down a little bit.’ I know he does have a little bit of trouble making 40 [super lightweight], but I think he’ll be maybe not as quick and as good a fighter at 47...”
“[Arum] asked me to get ahold of Manny,” Roach added about their conversation two weeks ago. “I tried to get ahold of Manny, but Manny’s on vacation with his kids. He takes them to a new country every year and so forth, so I can’t find him right now. But now [Arum] tells me that Mike Koncz [gave] him another opponent. So I guess he’s been talking to Arum, also. But Arum only gave me one name and that was the only name he gave me, was Terence Crawford.”

Roach: Crawford Who? That Won't Sell, Pacquiao-Garcia Will!
After Crawford's most recent win from three weeks ago, when he demolished Olympic gold medal winner Felix Diaz, he called for a fight with Pacquiao.
But Roach is not a big fan of the fight, and says the reason are strictly financial for his fighter.
Roach would much rather have him face three division world champion Mikey Garcia or former two division champion Danny Garcia.
“Who’s Terence Crawford?” said Roach to ABS-CBN News. “Popularity-wise, I think Mikey Garcia is the best option, because it will pit Mexican versus Filipino,” he added. But I like Danny Garcia the best.”
“(Danny) came all the way to my gym and they don’t like me. But he shook my hand and said, ‘I want Manny Pacquiao. I said okay, but they got to talk to Michael Koncz and Manny.”
According to Roach, he doesn't believe a black fighter being matched against a Filipino will do good business on pay-per-view. Other than Pacquiao's mega-fight with Floyd Mayweather Jr., Roach indicates that Pacquiao's numbers against black fighters on pay-per-view have not been impressive.
But Pacquiao did over a million buys for Shane Mosley, who at the time was viewed as a big underdog. And Pacquiao's numbers against Joshua Clottey, who was unknown, generated around 700,000 buys.

Roach: Arum 'Pushing For' Pacquiao-Crawford; Fight Concerns Me
Roach told a small group of reporters following a press conference for the Cotto-Ali fight that Bob Arum wants to make a Manny Pacquiao-Terence Crawford fight in 2018. The 85-year-old promoter previously was reluctant to match Pacquiao, who’ll turn 39 on December 17, against the 30-year-old Crawford, presumably because the highly skilled Crawford would’ve presented a troublesome style for Pacquiao...
“Arum wants Pacquiao to fight Crawford,” Roach said. “I’m a little bit concerned about that fight. It’s a tough fight. Crawford’s a young guy, coming up and so forth, and Manny probably has seen his best days behind him. But I will still train him and get him ready for that fight, if that does happen. And they’re pushing for it, so it might.”
