A very ill informed proposal. Fighters need to be built up. Promoters invest money often making losses trying to build a fighter to a position his fights can be a commercial success and make a profit. To do this they make NPV analysis based on estimates of money over a certain period. If they were to sign a fighter on a fight by fight basis no fighter would be worth a dime.
Pass a law that fighters can only be signed on a fight-by-fight basis?

I didnt have time to answer this the other day, but here is my response.Do you think that if this law were passed all promoters would suddenly quit doing what they're doing?
Promoters could still make money from putting on shows. And if they build a reputation of consistently putting on good events then they can build a name brand that they can shop around to networks and streaming services. Just like now.
The only difference is fighters would always remain free agents forcing everyone to compete for their services.
I dont think they will quit what they are doing but you can believe majority of boxers will be taking a pay cut and it you think boxing is hard now for prospects to come up it will be a dog eat dog world for them if this laws past.
In my honest opinion promoters will just exploit the system and get around this new law making this new non-progressive or advantageous to the actual boxers but for promoters. As I see it Promoters will just add options to the contracts to extend it i.e. "in the event of a victory ______(Boxer) will give top rank the option to immediately contest for the title no later than 8 months after victory barring any injuries, that will make the time line impossible" or some **** like that, its basically what they do now, on top of being able to have legal obligation to a new prospect they signed if they under performed one night.
Being a free agent only is a good thing for the top elite, the rest need teh safety blanket of obligation a promise to promote them and grantee date to make a living. You think boxing want to live check by check and these checks coming ever 6 months? with no gurantee of the next check?Last edited by .!WAR MIKEY!.; 05-13-2019, 08:49 AM.Comment

Sadly I don't think the WBSS has caught fire with many US fans. Its not really been aimed at US fans to begin with. So I think thats problem #1 with the WBSS. And look no further than the divisions they've chosen.
CW is a notorious Euro-fan friendly division & they've dipped in that pool twice now, 168 is also a Euro-fan friendly division largely & historically, 118 is a lil guy division that US fans hold lil interest in typically & 140 is about the most interesting division to US fans, but its a young division talent wise & it is a division I consider the biggest lil guy division so that probably plays a part in it too.
The first thing the WBSS should do IF there is a season 3 is take on a US fan friendly division if possible. Problem is it might not even be doable with the platform wars going on right now. And the promoter signing away a top ten guy for 1 to 3 fights is a big ask to for US promoters. I think UK & other countries see more opportunity with doing stuff like that, for US promoters they feel & are usually pretty right in saying the money is in the US & they don't wanna part with the money by letting their fighter fight their biggest fights outside of their promotion.
The WBSS might work as a better concept if they include the promoters in the tournament so they are seeing some upside to. With the money troubles the WBSS is already having I'm wondering if there is any money to be splitting up doe is the problem there.
Dig the WBSS, but I think it might not even make it to a 3rd season & if it does I suspect it has a good chance of being the least appealing of the first three seasons.Comment

I wasn't suggesting the WBSS has been majorly successful, I was airing my thoughts of whether DAZN could have sunk enough money into the prizes or their own version of WBSS to lure the names like the WW's and other popular divisions instead of funding Matchroom, GBP, GGG etc.I guess this would rely on the top guys believing they could win and you'd probably have half decent prizes for placing 2nd and 3rd as well.Sadly I don't think the WBSS has caught fire with many US fans. I think you still got the same problems. In fact cuz DAZN is one of the platforms involved in the current platform wars its probably more of a problem than WBSS is having.I wasn't suggesting the WBSS has been majorly successful, I was airing my thoughts of whether DAZN could have sunk enough money into the prizes or their own version of WBSS to lure the names like the WW's and other popular divisions instead of funding Matchroom, GBP, GGG etc.I guess this would rely on the top guys believing they could win and you'd probably have half decent prizes for placing 2nd and 3rd as well.
Obviously there are tournaments to be made on all platforms as is right now (DAZN/160, ESPN/175 & PBC/154 & 147) that would be worthwhile doe & thats a possibility for sure, but they'd be one offs.
I dig the WBSS cuz its a yearly thing & there are always divisions we wanna see &/or could be "figured out" with a tournament. But to the WBSS specifically I think they need to figure out a new way to do business to stick around that includes promoters better.Comment

You explained very well why my suggestion might not work for prospects breaking into the sport.
I hadn't considered that.Comment

These are grown men. They should be able to enter into a mutual assenting contract agreement that they so choose. They know how to opt out of a contract if they want to.
They do it in baseball, football and basketball all the time. They have the freedom of choice of signing a long term deal or a short term deal with which ever team they so please.
No one is coercing or forcing these fighters to sign these long term contracts if they don't want to. It's called freedom of choice.Comment
