I think some fans forget about context. Canelo is 28 and still growing. G, back in 2013, was a 32 yr old who was finished growing. He was also a desperate fighter who had been ignored by Universum. The 154-168 was the schtick used to 'just get me a meaningful fight'. Once he got a modest streak at MW going, the best plan was to continue to win, extend the streak, and wait for a bigger fish to move to MW to challenge him. Martinez..no..Cotto...no... Canelo...2 years later. The Ward thing?? That timeline has been beaten to death. Ward had one offer to fight G early on...but was injured and having legal issues. After that, it made no sense to fight Ward, as G was racking up defenses on the way to the (kind of) record, and awaiting a real money bout with Canelo, who was bound to have to move up at some point.
