I like Ortiz, but
I ain't buying that shit. Those guys were all on the same page and knew what was going on. They are either in damage control for the backlash Ortiz has been getting, or they are coming back with their tails between their legs after Hearn called their bluff.
Funny how this all came out after Hearn said he'd come out with the real story. It's gone from trashing them on social media to 'it was a misunderstanding'.
Man, a lot of posters called $5m a lowball and called Hearn cheap and a liar. Even when the purse was a rumoured $7-8m, some posters still said it was a good idea to turn it down. Yet now team Ortiz is saying it wasn't a low offer at all and they would take that. Guess those posters were wrong about all the 'low-balling'.Comment

But hell man okay I get it. You gotta do some -EV sh^t boxing career-wise to initially get into the US & these guys are hustling to get into these positions with fighters, but these promotional deals still end eventually.
Ortiz gots 9 years in the pro game. Surely he's have had to sign at least 2 or 3 extensions I'd imagine. Why is he signing over & over with them when he's could've opted out cuz once he's here he's here & the MAA does give a fighter outs with a contract with a promoter?Last edited by Eff Pandas; 04-26-2019, 06:52 PM.Comment

Yes, an opposing view to change my mind. I'd rather believe what I've heard numerous fighters say and what I read promoters and even Espinoza say. Everybody else can't be wrong and Terry is the only one that right. Simmer down boyComment

Jay Jimenez should be fired immediately.
This is the problem with Cuban fighters. They enter the country and sign these lifetime deals with shady promotions like Dade and Caribe, and then feel obligated to stick with them until them. Meanwhile these promotional companies do nothing for them besides take their money.Comment

Randomly I'm seeing this Jorge guy has some other businesses too btw.
But looking at it from the outside, a promoter does incur expenses with the development of a fighter. To get a novice from 0-0 to say 18-0 will cost a promoter close to $250k, even more if the fighter was a well-known amateur, has a high KO percentage, or is a lefty. So at some point the promoter needs to recoup his investment.
And I am speaking in general here, because I would suspect this Dade promotions outfit has not spent 30 cents on Ortiz career. And I know that because when Ortiz fought on one of MY shows early in his career, it was Henry Rivalta who paid his purse, not this Dade outfit. Or maybe they bought his paper later on or something, who knows.
I did see Henry Rivalta of Heavyweight Factory promoted several of Ortiz's first dozen-ish fights before Ortiz appears to be freelanced out to various promoters til he got to GBP around 20 fights in & when most of us started to really hear about him.
But all that being said, the promoter should take into account the fighters situation, how much is his management taking, how much is his trainer taking, is he paying child support or other obligations, etc, etc, but IMO under no circumstances should a promoter take more than 10-15% in these situations where they are not even doing the event. They should still recover any advances or other monies owed out of the purse deductions, but their initial profit off the top should not go over 10-15% IMO.......
What would you consider a promoter who's taking over 15%?
Does a guy operating like this guy is operating have to have had a promotional license at any point or maintain a promoters license or some level of activity "promotional" (if that makes any sense) despite not putting on shows or reallllllly being a promoter? I'm guessing no on the second part, but unsure on the first part.
This seems f#cking nuts to me that this is a thing. Granted its boxing & the level of corruption in boxing never fails to impress me, but wtf still.Comment
