It's a combination of both. Yah because that's possible in ufc not boxing. Cormier can do that in the UFC but not in the boxing. UFC requires far less skill and athelticism than boxing. Jones can't train for 3 years in boxing and win a hw title. Look at the ufc brackets, blacks are not that dominant as you think. It's a mix of races.

Athleticism plays a huge part, but not all freak athletes are going to be freak athletes in another sport...

Roy Jones jr was a freak athlete in boxing but not good enough for the NBA...You'd think with his speed and agility it would transfer...

Now, take a freak athlete in the NBA or NFL in the same weight class as Roy and unless they trained their WHOLE LIVES from childhood, they'd have NO chance against Roy in a boxing match

at least you agree boxing requires far more athleticism. This is exactly why Deontay Wilder is successful. Which is why athleticism transfers like in the OP.

Gerald Washington is a perfect example of a big athletic guy who didn't even train boxing until he was an adult and yet contending for the title.
