    Is Salvador Sanchez overrated?

Im not saying he was not a great fighter he was, but with dying at 23-4 does he get a bit of a pass?Had some real good wins vs Gomez and Lopez, and a pre-prime A Nelson. Was just watching his fight with Nelson again and he was having a lot of probs esp early and knowing that Nelson was great in rematches im not sure he wins if they fought again.
Now Nelson was a ATG but this was a 13fight version who had never fought more then 10rds.Again to be clear not saying he was not a great fighter its just some have him as best Mexican ever(Chavez for me).Dying young like he did its hard to place him and his biggest win was against a smaller(a bit)Gomez.
Would have loved to see him vs a prime Chavez he very well might have been able to handle a raw Julio at start of 130pd reign, but could he handle lets say the Chavez that fought Rosario or even a 130pd more mature version right before he moved up?I think he was ATG but I don't think he beats Nelson in rematch or a prime Chavez who to be fair might have been a tad bigger.
    Any thoughts?

I think he’s an all time great he accomplished a lot for guy barely 23 and beat some damn good fighters at a young age. What adjustments do you think Nelson would make?I think Sanchez as a skilled boxer puncher could maybe have more room for adjustment.I think his boxing and punching combo would give Chavez problems.Sanchez was a young man and his best was still to come.

        Who’s doing the rating?

I think like all that died young there’s a tendency to romanticize them. He’s generally rated #3 all-time on the Mexico list and around #4-5 on the all-time lists so I’d say those are fair ratings. He’d usually rate around 40-60 all-time pound for pound which I’d say is fair (closer to 50-55 for me).

When people say he’s the best fighter ever, unbeatable etc; two things 1. They are overrating him and 2. They have only seen the Gomez, Lopez, Nelson fights (and think Nelson was prime).

We would have found out so much in a Eusebio Pedroza fight. That’s one of the classic fights that unfortunately didn’t happen.

I say he was a special fighter for sure. He’s on my personal Mount Rushmore of all-time favorite boxers.

I’m not sure he loses to Chavez. That’s very difficult because we didn’t see him at 130. I would venture to pick him over Nelson in another hard fight.

I agree that Chavez is the greatest Mexican fighter of all-time without doubt. Sanchez may be “better”, that’s subjective, but he’s not “greater” and that is factual. I think Olivares is #2. Marquez and Sanchez are interchangeable at 3 & 4 and Vicente Saldivar deserves a mention. His resume was incredible and he’d be about 50/50 with Sanchez IMO.

Nice fair post. Also pretty close to how I would rate him.Would have been nice to see him against more different styles like Pedroza.Would favor him in that fight but the EP would have been a pain in azz for almost anyone. And also a more seasoned Nelson.

Pedroza would be interesting. Both were slow starters with high IQ, Pedroza had a clear edge in speed, fast feet and was so dirty inside. If Sanchez can stop those tricks he eeks out a close one IMO.

I really enjoyed watching him fight I thought he was terrific. Is he overrated by some people? Yes he is. Saying he's the greatest Mexican fighter ever is being really optimistic for a guy with such a short career. Rating him over Chavez who had a win streak of over 80 fights before his first loss is kind of reckless.

                  And finito Lopez?

Regardless of the unfashionable weight class, ten years and remaining unbeaten takes some doing. And stylistically there have been few to compare.

1st I never said he was not a great fighter, but there are people how have a tendency to romanticize him or others who die or something makes them retire early.Nelson was winning that fight early and im not sure he had even went ten yet and if so that's tops they fought 15.AN also was a bit raw he was off balance at times and also telegraph the right where you never seen that later he had great feet and offence/defense.He also had a history of improving in rematches. So im saying Nelson was was better then many remember more so then putting Sanchez down. And id rate him pretty close to how other poster Chris I believe maybe a tad lower all time.At that high of a level being able too beat most/all styles really comes into it and due to no fault of his own was not able to prove that. But would not have stared post if I did think highly of him
