    Rivera-spinks

ICEMAN DIARY ENTRY: July 12, 2006- Corey Spinks' manager (Kevin Cunningham) was interviewed for a boxing website today where he was talking about Corey's options and future and when someone mentioned possibly fighting to unify their two titles against WBA champion Jose Rivera he made it out like fighting him would be a step backward for them, like they are these big superstars now, and what they really want is to fight Oscar DeLahoya or Floyd Mayweather. I have news for Kevin, though. Corey is two steps backwards for Oscar at his point. And Mayweather just convincingly beat the guy that stopped Corey in his previous fight so... you know? I think fans of this boxing world would certainly agree when I say there is absolutely no way in this world you would ever see Jose Antonio Rivera run around the ring for the entire last round of a fight that was razor close on the score cards like Corey did against Karmazin the other day. He didn't even do it when he was in the 12th and way ahead on points against a dangerous guy like Terra Garcia, did he? Boxing on huge networks like Showtime and HBO is all about the entertainment value that you bring and, believe me, the average fan is not really enjoying a guy coming into the ring with a four minute ring walk while dancing with a rapper only to turn around and literally run for the entire last round of a close fight. I actually like Corey's boxing skills and think he is an exceptional boxer but I think they are seriously overestimating the value of his win last weekend over Roman Karmazin. Cunningham called Karmazin "the best 154 pounder in the world." Better than Oscar? Quartey? Vernon Forrest? Mosely? Ahh... I don't know about that, my man. In any event, Jose is more than willing to go to St. Louis and risk his title against Spinks there and as long as the judge isn't working our fight that somehow, inexplicably, gave Spinks the last round of his fight with Karmazin, saving the fight for him instead of it letting it be what it was supposed to be: a draw.

With fair and competent judging we are discussing an interview right now with Karmazin's manager instead of Cunningham.

Great read Ice & I think that Rivera would stop Spinks if they fought. I also think that Rivera would give any of the 154 fighters hell if he fought the top dogs. He's got a helluva chin & seems like his power is solid at 54 too. He's a dangerous fight for any & I can see him being avoided like the plague. I think that he should try to get a fight with Margarito if he can't secure a date with Winky Wright. It seems people think that Margarito is some sort killer nowadays & I think it could be a fight of the year candidate like the fight with Terra Garcia.

I agree Spinks showed nothing more than a gutsy effort and got a favorable decision. I can't stand to see a guy run even if he thinks he has the fight won. Further, Karmazin figured him out by the 9th round. ALL of the judges gave Karmazin only 2 of the last 4 rounds. Objectively speaking he won 3 out of the last 4 rounds. By that math, it should have been a majority draw. Nobody wants to see Spinks at 154 as he is even lesse exciting than at 147. To think he is on Mayweather or DLH's level is delusional. Who is his promoter Winky Productions?

Id favor Rivera in this fight by TKO. Rivera has to put pressure on from the opening bell and wear Spinks out.

Things you can GUARANTEE from Jose Rivera; He will always be in spectacular shape. He will always come t fight. He will never run to protect his lead. What more can you ask?

IMO, thats the way it should be. Ice Man what do you think of Margarito vs. Rivera at 154?

Jose would definitely fight him. I think Margarito is somewhere between what everybody is saying he is and being pretty good.. in other words he is not the awesome machine he is painted to be but he is certainly a dangerous fight for anybody. One thing about Jose, for better or worse, he takes a SHOT!! Jose woul dbe Antonio's toughest fight I tell you that much and I myself would love to see what would happen should he lands his best shots and Jose comeback harder on him. They say that they cant get fights for Margarito but as long as they dont try to rob Jose of the money his championship commands we rake that fight RIGHT NOW

King has Rivera and Spinks both - Mayweather and DLH don't need a Cory Spinks fight right now. Spinks is going to need more than a narrow win over Roman Karmazin to get himself a big fight. It might take winning a rubber match against Zab Judah or a Mayorga rematch or going against the Quartey-Forrest winner to set up a big fight like that... and Oscar will be retired by the time that happens...

I see Spinks vs. Rivera as fairly likely, especially since Showtime announcers were plugging it

Thats roughly how I have it,it would come down to who wears who out first.Margarito doesnt hit as hard as Terra but is much more active and relentless.
