Sergio Martinez' knee was not 100% for the Cotto fight, and the man was never the same fighter after that injury. Since his game relied heavily on mobility, getting in and out and circling.

I like Cotto but give him very little credit for this win. He beat a shell of the Sergio that once was.

I think that shot from Cotto totally threw off Maravilla equilibrium and he overcompensated and further aggravated his knee injury

He was unknown at 30 years old trying to make a name and restart his career after a coupla years in the promotional wilderness. Dude came to the ring against Proksa in his US debut weighing 168Lbs at 30 years old... that's less than most top JMWs of the same age. I'd say that if he'd started his career in the US instead of Germany (where the biggest stars at the time where at 160) he'd likely have debuted at 154.

Why would he move up when his only leverage to get any fights at all was his secondary MW title - who would he fight and probably more importantly who would be interested in fighting him at a time when he had no name at all to speak of? The only time it made sense was when he started to make real waves and got the HBO hype machine fully behind him maybe around 2014 or so... and of there was mention of several major SMW fights around this time (none of which materialised).

This ain't some attempt to defend Golovkin's honour or some such nonsense, but merely to point out that the scenario you paint just doesn't make any sense in the context of Golovkin's career and promotional situation at the time. Maybe when he was 32 / 33, but then who was there to fight at SMW? Froch retired, Fatass Jr went to Haymon and Ward only became available about the time it looked like things were starting to happen for Golovkin at 160.

Let's stop repeating lies as truths. The Porters on record saying they wanted spence fight and we're told Spence wanted to go another direction (M Garcia) Crawford wants that fight and Spence makes up any excuse possible not to get that made. Spence would rather fight little Mikey and small old Pacquiao. I mean it his career so he can do what he wants. My only issue is that ppl keep relaying the Spence is ducked lie and it's clearly untrue. (Just as it probably was with GGG, Charlo etc) next..let's not start the Spence is Hagler, Garcia is Duran BS either. Mikey don't take real challenges and Spence don either. Move on

Truth. He was a fighter who depended on his athleticism but couldn't move. Sergio came for the paycheck, had some surgeries, then called it a career.

Lol at the Douche who wrote in referring to himself as "an Aficionado who checks his ego". That's a contradiction in terms. I can think of another word beginning with "A" that would be more suitable.

Give credit where it is due. Cotto caught him cold in the first round and hurt him. This caused his knee to buckle and he aggravated his knee injury. Martinez did not come limping into the ring.

why not, it worked for Golovkin for the past 6 years

                      people still recycle that bullshlt

Golovkin took the fights he wanted, and he passed on the rest..... just like everyone else

he could have fought Cotto, Ward, Lara, Saunders, Charlo, etc
