Ritson had 3 British title defences before stepping up and still got outclassed when he stepped up.
Yeah at least one or two fringe European fights before challenging the champ are what I'm asking for. Even if an extra bout or two won't suddenly prepare a British champ for a European champ, it will at least cause their limitations to be exposed at a lower, less dangerous level

Cheeseman's win over Jones gave me some confidence in his ability to handle a jump up but with hindsight I think we in the UK have gotten carried away with our success lately and started to believe our domestic scene was closer to European level than it is. Hopefully the Ritson and Cheeseman losses will give our matchmakers some perspective

I think Eddie being under pressure from Sky to bring new stars through probably plays a part. AJ fighting in the US, with Brook and Khan losing big fights whilst Bellew, Groves, Haye and Froch have retired in recent years they are waiting on the next generation.

The days of slow burning careers like Hatton and Calzaghe are over, for the time being at least.

I do think though that the likes of Buatsi, Kelly and Okolie are a different level and could handle European level. Nobody expected Ritson or Cheeseman to go far to start with, they're mainly brawlers.

      • I didn’t know anything about Garcia and just threw £200 on cheeseman at a juicy 9/4.

That Cheeseman is an ugly boy I didn’t think anything comes close to that apart from my face after witnessing the first round. I knew my money was gone . So I just watched the rest of the fight hoping he would get knocked out to make me feel better

Spaniards got that money, hard brexit I guess.

Shocked cheeseman corner didnt throw the towel, the last rounds were excessive punishment, cheeseman career was shortened I can tell you.

Garcia dont punch hard, but he can put on a hell's pace, he beat Chaca in Barcelona the same way he did with cheeseman tonight, but Isaac didnt put his face first like today.

His team says Garcia has a crazy heart beat, like 36 beats per minute on relax, thats some tour the france winner rate. He didnt look tired after 12 to be honest.

            • Somewhere during the first sux rounds of the fight Cheeseman should have stopped chasing Garcia, threw out the jab and boxed. Should have made adjustments.

Gonna have to catch the replay later on tonight.

                • Anthony Fowler called it tbf.

Ted looked good to me prior to this and is obviously a very tough man but Fowler pointed out he was defeated several times in the ABA’s whereas Fowler has never lost a fight at domestic level.

I also don’t see the harm in the matchmaking. I didn’t see it going down like that. But really it is hard to know how good anyone is until they go through the levels.

I’d prefer your Cheesemans and Ritsons getting ‘exposed’ than a guy like Yarde who will probably miss this level completely and somehow end up in there with Kovalev or something.

I suppose this is an issue where we have such a powerful promoter and network knocking about that these European title shots are nothing. Eddie and sky will deliver with ease.

But it is a step up.

Will always remember Karmazin bodying Walker at this level.

Still think it’s the way to go for Brits.

                  Commonwealth, Brit, European, World.

I think it’s good that our fighters find their level quickly now. But yeah, obviously corners need to be mindful

                  • It was too easy to write Garcia off beforehand. 28 wins against nobody of note, all in Spain, and very little footage of him fighting available. What I saw last night was - dare I say - shades of Calzaghe. The barrage of tippy-tappy shots which accumulate to cut an opponant to ribbons, the constant in-out and lateral movement, and decent chin the few times anything big landed. There's even some physical similarities - though Garcia's a bit smaller.

I'm thinking the kid's a protege of Maravilla... ain't caught the fight yet but I've seen some earlier footage and I think Sergio's had a hand in his training maybe. Cheeseman's a solid UK domestic level dude though and if it was as one sided as folk seem to be saying then Garcia may be one to watch wherever his style comes from.
