Worst matchup style wise you'll find in the division. Make for a frustrating night of boxing from viewers standpoint. Both are names drawing attn. They want to milk it as long as they can. Both would make a more exciting fight with either Valdez or Warrington. A fight together would hurt them both because of how boring it would be.

That would've been too much activity for Russell. He only fights once per year and had already met his quota for 2018.

And at the end of the day what really became of Donaire???
You gonna tell me his career went alot better than Mares's career??
At the time Mares was undefeated, a two division champion, and a top 10 P4P fighter. Plus he's Mexican and popular among Latino fans.
That's a great name to have under your belt if any fighter could beat him... Why didn't Donaire take a chance??
Why didn't he ask Bob Arum to offer more money to have Mares fight on a Top Rank card like Golden Boy promotions was willing to do if the money was right???
Why didn't they counter offer the 3 million dollars Golden Boy promotions offered??
Think about it before you write back with some nonsense!
Mares was willing and ready to test himself against Donaire.
Obviously Donaire wasn't so who ducked who???
Your memory is very very off.

First, we know Donaire is no canelo, but nonetheless he was what many were speculting to be Arum’s favorite child to capitalize on Pac’s fanbase.

Two.. Look, I like Mares. Love even. But his career pales in comparison the Donaire’s. He was just never that caliber and that’s the blunt truth Hate it or love it, Donaire was an S class fighter and Mares has always been an at BEST A- or lower. Your fandom is clearly getting in the way of logic here.

Abner has NEVER been the best fighter at each class he’s fought in *and* he has never been accused of being that either.

He was definitely a p4p fighter... he wasnt even top two in his own division and hasn’t been since then.

Also, you are aware he fought Rigo instead, right? A better fighter than Mares... Rigo was so good that people were saying Donaire was ducking. Hell, Mares has outright said Rigo beats him (keeps it )...

But Donaire was on such a tear at that time that outside of Rigo at 122, no one was left..he looked downright unbeatable by everyone from 122 down. He was an actual top 5 p4p, 3 weight class champ where he beat guys considered monsters. Hell, Montiel was top 10 p4p actually..7 ish or so when Nonito starched him.

Donaire was a bigger name and better fighter then. Doesnt matter that Abner is Mexican and his potential..what kind of argument is that? Being Filipino fighting out of CA is f ucking great, especially with the landscape then. He wasnt hurting for fans and support and was also popular with mexicans. Hell, bringing race into it? It didn’t even seem possible for any mexican to beat Donaire at THAT time in THAT landscape.

Letting Donaire fight on golden boy for 3mil is ******ed. Donaire was the biggest name at the lower weights and also the highest regarded. Abner was at best top 3-4 of his weight class around the time.

Donaire is a hall of famer. Put some respek on his name. Did you not watch boxing then?

Mares would dream of a similar career and thats no knock on Abner, but their peaks have been veeeeeeeeeery disproportionate.

Mares is a good name now and has made some good money, but it’s on a different level of athletic talent, feats, and success.

Mares has had a good career. Donaire has had a GREAT career.

        Abner is a good fighter.
Donaire was a special fighter. A great fighter.

That’s the bottom line...cuz Stone Cold said so

Now you're making a little more sense but just not there yet!
Neither fighter was great and neither can be considered great.
I'll admit that in their prime Donaire was considered to be the better fighter but let's face it... Neither fighter turned out to be what the public or the so-called boxing experts made them out to be..
Neither fighter has been the same since the Johnny Gonzalez and Rigondaux fights...
They've both had very good careers but neither fighter is a Hall of Famer but there is a small chance Donaire gets in.. I'll guess we'll just have to wait and see....
But look you keep saying the same thing about not making any sense for Donaire to go to Golden Boy promotions to fight Mares... Well explain to me why they didn't counter offer to have Mares fight on a Top Rank card when he was willing to do so...
This whole argument started when you said Mares ducked Donaire but I basically proved you wrong already!
If you forgot about the 3 million dollar offer Golden Boy promotions sent Top Rank then just say so!
There's no shame in admitting when you're wrong,... All I wanted to do was prove to you that Mares DID NOT duck Donaire and I did that.
If you feel Donaire was a better fighter than Mares and he would of beaten Mares then you're entitled to your opinion. It would of been a great fight had it happened when they were both in their primes...
