great outboxing.
vitali went blitzkrieg and in doing so failed to defend himself.Comment

It was caused by a punch. Lewis would have beat him anyway, hed worked him out after the first few roundsComment

I know it's a long time ago and all...but still after rewatching the fight I'm convinced that the cut above his eye was caused from a headbutt. Yes he did hit Vitali with a big overhand right, but then right after that he smothered him and hit him with a big headbutt and with his glove as well, then the blood started flowing.

At 22:50 you can see the headbutt/glove slash. The whole sequence can be viewed from 22:44 to 22:56. What do you guys think ?Comment

He had worked him out ?.. he was losing the fight 58-56 on all 3 judges scorecards. He would have lost if they went to the scorecards after it was ruled that the cut came from a headbutt instead of a punch. You don't get my argument man. I think it should have been stopped, but not as a TKO win for Lewis but instead it should have went to the scorecards because I believe the cut above his eye was from a headbutt. Did you watch the sequence in the video that I linked or not ?Comment

No, it still looks too me like it was caused by a punch. I think the real outrage should be from us not getting to see the rematch. I get it that Lewis had accomplished all he wanted in the sport, and earned the right to walk away whenever he wanted. But talk about an anticlimactic ending to his career.
This also seemed to make worse the vacuum that was left in the heavyweight division once Lewis retired. It was a mess with no proper heir to the divisions' lineage.Comment

What are you talking about? He was champion for years and one of the best heavyweights in history. He only lost two fights. He lost a fight he was winning when his shoulder was injured and he retired and the Lewis fight that he was winning but was stopped because the cut. He beat the hell out of everyone else and they weren't fringe contenders. He was an excellent boxer and a very hard puncher.Comment

no vitali was the lucky one, lucky his career wasnt ended that night.Comment

Lewis didn't land a whole lot until Vitali had to pick up his chin to get a view under his drooping eyelid. That said, I think the cut was caused by a punch
Shortened Lewis's career by at least 3 fights because he wanted nothing to do with a rematch. You can take from that what you wish.Comment
