Mayweather would regularly give away the first 4 rounds to work someone out.

Didn’t take risks until he had their timings etc down.

It's a brave and tactical thing to do. Many athletes especially boxers get caught up and become too predictable going only 5th gear.

Boxers can go down to 4th gear for a round for a close one, or 3rd gear and lose the round without getting hurt. Their opponent throws a lot and then becomes tired.

Heck trainers advise them to do it. If it was rife it'd be a bad thing but I see it as an ability to swallow pride and do the necessary.

That only happened with McGregor and Maidana 1. Every other time he was in there winning the numbers game.

See, I felt like Trout lost a close fight. If he was star-struck or ****** enough to let it stay close instead of letting his hands go, that's on him.

I agree, Trout did lose a close fight. A very close fight.

Problem was, after the 8th round, he was informed that the scorecards were 80-72 Canelo. He had to adjust his fight style which caused him to lose.

A lot of times it has to do with fatigue and the fighter becoming complacent, or maybe even a lack of concentration. It's recognizing room for improvement in performance within their current abilities, instead of feeling like they were just, outright, outmatched.
This. It doesn't mean intentionally giving away rounds, just means I slept through some rounds / wasn't busy enough.

To me, "giving rounds away" is where one fighter is NOT tired or winded, they just choose not to do anything to actually try and win.

Pacquiao/Clottey - Clottey straight up just did NOTHING for 9 rounds. Not tired, not hurt.

Pacquiao/Algieri - Algieri was "in the cage" for 8 and a half rounds doing nothing. Not tired, not hurt.

Broner/Porter - unless you count excessive fouling by Broner for 11 rounds. Definitely not hurt, not tired.

Broner/Mikey - unless you count shaking your head for 9 rounds. Not hurt, not tired

Broner/Vargas - You heard Cunningham yelling at Broner. "You givin' away shіt you shouldn't be giving away". Not hurt, not tired.

Thurman/Garcia because Danny literally didn't try for like 5 rounds of a CHAMPIONSHIP fight yet was never hurt or tired.

Porter/Garcia because Danny only showed up like 45 seconds of each round in a CHAMPIONSHIP fight and barely showed up the second half. Not hurt, not tired.

Mayweather/Pacquiao - Manny wasn't tired OR hurt against Floyd yet only showed up in three, MAYBE four rounds.

Now do you all understand the difference?
I agree with your definition, and I think I like all of those examples.

But for me, the biggest example of a guy just letting a fight slip through his fingers is Wlad versus Fury. Now, we have just seen Wilder's punch output drop very significantly against Fury, so there's something TF does in there to not just be evasive but to just hypnotize you into freezing. But still, Wlad wasn't tired and he just wasn't active, so it fits your definition.

“Giving a round away” is usually an excuse and often a mental thing.

A fighter might say they will give a round away when they are on the back foot, for example when they have previously just been knocked down.

Reality is it is probably a result of exhaustion or being in worse physical shape at that moment in time which restricts them from “being at their best”.

If the fighter really goes into a round with the mindset (rather than say it after the event) they will almost certainly lose the round, and worse still risk being dropped.
