Musica pagada nunca suena bien. Hearn missed that lesson, at $30 mil guaranteed per fight, Canelo might give Cotto a rematch.
Comments Thread For: Hearn: DAZN wants Canelo to Fight Jacobs and GGG Next Year

The problem is that the tough fights (outside of GGG and Jacobs a distant second) is the soft touches and the “tough” fights are the same numbers wise and guys like Andrade and BJS arent going to give exciting fights as it is.
If Canelo stops Charlo or BJS or something, the masses will say they were soft touched anyway.
They dont bring in numbers that Canelo isn’t already bringing and thats where the problem is. GGG was so far ahead of the competition and now that the peak has beenn conquered, everyone else is just another guy as far as the common fan is concerned.
Canelo is so far ahead in stardom that Charlo, BJS, Andrade, even Lemieux arent going to bring in a different audience.
The numbers arent low because of Canelo, he’s proven his worth on PPV, it’s the platform. It’s not going to catch on immediately and if your ONLY two meaningful fights in 12 months are the two Canelo is in, you’re alienating the rest of your division and shows. What DAZN needs is more subscribers, and fighting 99% of the MW division isnt going to do it in one night. People need good fights between ALL the MWs in the division (and platform) and not just Canelo. Otherwise you just hold out for his fights exclusively. You have no incentive in keeping your subscriptiong after may and september. Why watch Jacobs fight? He’s not fighting Canelo. Why watch Andrade fights? He’s not fighting Canelo. Etc etc. he fights Jacobs..nice..but now youve lost a piece on the board in Jacobs. He fights GGG (if signed)..now you have one less event and one less piece again. After Danny and GGG, that’s basically it. The longer you can go with your good fighters winning, the more events you can make.
All the fans tuning into those fights from these other fighters tune in for Canelo, lets be honest. But not all fans who tune in for Canelo tune in for them and they dont want to just essentially discard them as pawns for singular May and September events. You need to somehow keep guys interested in them too by using Canelo as bait. If DAZN is successful, it wont be off two events a year and it wont be quick if its going to be successful at all. If Canelo can’t do it, it’s just a problem with the platform. We already know the guy can get a mil plus households to shell out 60-70 bucks to watch him.
On a side note.. da zone is such a ****** name. Or is it just me?
Will fights like the Fielding fight get people to tune in to watch? Sometimes. Will it get them to subscribe and say to themselves "Wow, this platform is great and I'll get my moneys worth in great fights".
They are competing with other platforms that are getting out of the game like HBO that had other things to watch also, so there was a lot more value for your money.
They currently have Joshua sitting out the hottest heavyweight division in a long time, with 3 belts.
Canelo fighting guys like Fielding, who Im not going to lie, Id never heard of before it was announced he was fighting Canelo.
There is also a big difference, in being a PPV star, that can put on profitable events, and being in fights the make fans want to subscribe to a platform, instead of buying the PPV.
Unfortunately for DAZN, Canelo vs Fielding looked like the kind of fight you expect for a young prospect in his 3rd or 4th outing that is being built up.
I think a lot of boxing fans have been getting turned off by the fragmentation of the market. Its getting harder and harder to follow.
DAZN was exciting for the possibility that it would bring things back together in a singular place to follow boxing as other distributors get out of the market.
I'm not encouraged so far. I haven't signed up. I probably wont until they stage a relevant fight where the outcome isn't already a foregone conclusion.
Boxing is coming off of a lot of sour decisions. Rightly or wrongly, Canelo is currently seen as the beneficiary of some behind the scenes magic to keep him winning.
DAZN will have a very hard time, if they can't put on fights that show that boxing on DAZN won't work that way.
Right now they just put Canelo is one of the biggest mismatches I have seen a major star in outside of a last minute replacement.
The same year that Canelo was busted for PEDs that help cut weight, he moves to 168 for the soft touch too?
I dont think there is any correlation personally, but people make up their own decisions, and the levels of corruption in boxing are currently so far beyond and above what is normally expected, they cant expect to succeed like this.
I use to watch everything, now its a lot of effort to keep track of everything, and care about it while watching every decision go the wrong way.
I was excited about DAZN, that excitement has faded.
Unless they can prove otherwise, they are just a new network offering the same kinds of mismatches, home cooking, and protected fighters that everyone else is showing.
Once there are no longer compelling matchups happening, its hard to stay fans of fighters.
I don't really care enough about any particular fighter to tune in to watch them fight stay busy fights with the promise that the next one will be a good one anymore. It never is, the next one is a tune up fight too.
As a business, DAZN needs to convince people like me, who use to buy every single PPV, and subscribed to every network that showed boxing, that DAZN is going to put on great fights like Showtime did in the Marquez vs Vazquez era of "we don't pay for fighters we pay for fights".
They have Joshua, he isn't even in attendance for the most significant fight in his division.
They have Canelo, we just saw him in against a guy they honestly wouldn't even hire as a sparring partner.
Its not encouraging so far.Comment

He’s only going to fight twice a year. Whether he went a year off or not, it doesnt change the fact the GGG fights were really tough, especially the way he fought the second time.
No fighter fights the best guy out every time, much less at the beginning of an 11 fight contract with guaranteed money. It’s unrealistic. Fighting Fielding wasn’t just about a soft touch, but a chance to not have as tough a camp or make weight.
Whether we agree with it or not, it’s just not condusive to a long career. The guy is currently the undisputed champ at 160. Everyone will have to get in line and guys are going to have to fight each other for a change and for a chance to fight him. You think DAZN is going to pay a guy to go through this gauntlet
GGG 3, Danny Jacobs, BJS, Andrade, Charlo, one of the 54 guys, Callum Smith, Ramirez, Uzcategui, and Benavidez to finish out the 10th fight?
Think Oscar would just randomly put him in the toughest available fights against these guys without letting some of them fight for it?
Canelo is already the star. Already the king at 160. I’d love the dude to go out and fight all these guys, but it’s easy for me to say. I’m not the one fighting or going through the rigors of the training camp for that type of fight where most of that wear and tear builds.
We’ll be lucky to get half of those and we’ll be grateful because when it’s all said and done, he’ll have made tougher/bigger fights than all of them (so long as he wins of course)
It’s still a business and it’ll be to everyone’s benefit if some of these guys fight each other to earn the right and pique our interest as fans as wortht challengers.
Outside of GGG and Jacobs, no one has done a whole lot to separate themselves as REAL challengers.
He is not undisputed at 160 although he beat the man at the top. He has mandatories and two other champions at 160.
He had his soft touch and easy camp, now it's time to defend the crown you wanna give him.Comment

20 bucks for a Jacob's and GGG fight wouldn't be all that bad. Better than $160 for PPV that's for sure.Comment

From what we’ve heard, the 300 mil is guaranteed. Outside of GGG and Jacobs (to a slightly lesser extent, everyone might as well be Fielding as far as the “casual” is concerned. Charlo, Andrade (even boxing fans dont know wtf this guy is up to half the time), BJS, etc are just random challengers to most. Like you say, the platform is “new”. They dont just want people subscribing to Canelo fights, but they’ll want people to want to watch the fights against guys Canelo will be fighting, AJ fights, etc.
just throwing what WE think and know will be good competitive fights doesnt mean the masses know the other guy. It’s not going to bring in or keep anyone that wasnt going to stick around for Canelo regardless. Fighting Danny Jacobs next is a great fight...but DAZN could put Jacobs (as the next challenger) in another fight, work up more interest in him while still retaining good name value for your company AND Jacobs and it’s still seen as DAZN having the arguable number 1 and 3 (or 2b depending if you consider him on GGG’s level). You dont want to risk Danny winning and riding off and now youre stuck with the second or third best MW as your best name at MW and 9 fights left on his guaranteed contract. People will still watch...And then imagine he loses AGAIN. DAZN needs Canelo winning first and foremost, and sporadically showing us he’s definitely the best. He already is.
People will pay for Canelo because he’s proven.
Fighting Charlo or Andrade or BJS does nothing for DAZN that he wouldnt already do with anyone else. How many of those tons of people/downloads they got this past weekend for the Canelo fight do you think knew Andrade or Charlo? Probably slightly more than knew Fielding.
You want interest in the division AND it’s fighters with the catalyst and end game being Canelo.
Does DAZN just want subscribers when Canelo fights? Just two Canelo fights a year? Or two canelo fights AND two Danny Jacobs fights because he’s the big dog thats going to fight Canelo?Comment

If you follow the sport to the extent you know who Charlo AND Fielding are and you don’t have DAZN you’re either poor or Floyd Mayweather jr. Honestly I’d be interested to hear WHY such a person didnt have a subscription.
If someone doesnt want to subscribe to DAZN (or any platform for that matter) to watch the best MW AND the best HW fight who also happen to be the biggest draws in the sport, then it sounds like you either can’t afford it or don’t care for the sport to the extent others do. That’s just how it seems. As an adult I spend so much money on dumb s hit that I’d rather have separate services for specifically what I want. If I just wanted HBO, Showtime, Hulu, ESPN, Netlix, I’d be paying less than I would for traditional cable and instead of changing the channel I’m changing the app and I’m watching exactly what I want to watch and I’m getting what I pay for.
Whenever anyone says they aren’t convinced I’m just like..how old are you? What needs convincing? You can watch real live men box...like you could on a different channel? They’re not trying to convince you on a flat earth theory. What’s to be skeptical of? It’s pro boxing for f ucks sake. You dont watch boxing for their perfect politics. Since as early as anyone can ever remember, the best fighters have never gone 50-0 in their career by fighting 50 all time greats in a row. The stars sometimes get a soft touch. Sometimes people get hyped. Sometimes fights dont get made. People get robbed. It’s going to happen whether it’s showtime, hbo, espn, dazn, fox, PBS kids, wherever.
But basically...I’d really like to know too, man.Comment

By your logic if Alvarez fights just once a year, he can fight a softie every other year. If he is only going to fight twice a year, both fights should be meaningful.
He is not undisputed at 160 although he beat the man at the top. He has mandatories and two other champions at 160.
He had his soft touch and easy camp, now it's time to defend the crown you wanna give him.
And I’d love for the guy to fight the best fighter every single time out but I know better. It’s not going to happen. Canelo isn’t being built up, whenever he fights it’s already meaningful in the sport. He’s bringing his end of the deal to the party and unfortunately, not everyone has the same to match or add to.
Like most us jaded fans, we still tend to misinterpet IMPORTANT/interesting fights as big ones. Take Cotto vs Canelo as an example. No one outside of massivee Cotto fans and Canelo haters thought Cotto would win that fight. But nobody can carry a fight alone. You need two names and unfortunately, there isnt anyone worth a damn outside of two guys who will get people to raise eyebrows. Outside of us, How many people are going to pay for Andrade vs Canelo? He has a better name than Fielding, but in the grand scheme of things, it might as well be the same in comparison to the Canelo’s and AJs of the sport. What’s the difference between fielding who is watched by 2000 people and Andrade who’s watched by 50k when the numbers you’re trying to get to are a mil plus or in the upper hundreds of thousands?
Whether you or I like it or not, this has been the trend in boxing pretty much ever. Fights will always be built, haters will always find a new person to cling to to beat the star, etc etc. so long as Canelo keeps winning, people will find someone else that he is ducking (to lesser extents guys like Loma and Bud and these guys feel it in lower overall numbers) in the same it went for Floyd, same went for Pac, same went for Oscar, and on and on.
He’s going to do meaningful fights, but I’m not holdng my breath on it being every time out because it’s basically the same s hit numbers wise or very near, to give him a fight they KNOW he’ll win instead of a risking losing an established money maker.
You dont want Rigondeaux, Hopkins, or to a lesser extent Andre Ward.
You want Oscar, Pac, Floyd, Canelo. You want the guy bringing in the money to stay ontop as long os possible if youve got a business to run.
You want the arguable #1 pfp guy in the world sho’s 28 AND already the established biggest draw in the sport to win. What does oscar gain from risking him losing in the middle of a brutal gauntlet of tough training camps and coming in injured against the wrong guy? What does DAZN get? Andrade beat Canelo. Now what? Andrade wont be the star Canelo is ever. In this sport you know its not enough to JUST be good.Last edited by NearHypnos; 12-19-2018, 12:59 AM.Comment
