Comments Thread For: Referee Having Sleepless Nights Over Stevenson Outcome

The third man on the ring in Quebec, when Adonis Stevenson was knocked out by Oleksandr Gvozdyk, is very troubled by the aftermath of the contest. According to referee Michael Griffin, he's has lost fifteen pounds since the night of the December 1. Griffin was back to working last Saturday night in New York City, as the referee for the welterweight bout between Sadam Ali and Mauricio Herrera at Madison Square Garden.

I understand why he feels badly but I don't see much he could have done differently.

He’s reffed like at least half a dozen Stevenson fights, probably feels like he knows him in a sense. I’m sure he’s seen Stevenson’s family in the locker room pre fight etc.
      Poor guy.

He's good ref, things happen in the sport.
He was a bad ref in that fight, missing the two knockdowns one against Adonis and the other against Gvozdyk, but when it came to the knockout there was nothing else he could've done, he stopped it at the appropriate time.

Man that sucks for him. I hope he's getting help for this or at least talking to fellow refs to get advice.

It wasn't his fault. It's just bad luck, that's all.

He is ATROCIOUS ref. He is paid to ref Stevenson fights and also missed one clear KD. 2nd KD he didn't call either. And I don't blame stoppage!

He’s not to blame. I feel for him though it’s got to be rough seeing that up close.

Referees bear a lot of the blame for the decline of boxing. The A-side favoritism has caused a lot of dangerous situations. One thing that comes to mind is Benn-McClellan. That British ref created the situation and caused the lifelong damage by for one not counting Benn out, but two, he continued action right away after McClellan was badly butted. All fight, the ref was trying to help Benn. People forget that part of the story.

I'm glad this ref feels some guilt about the outcome. I don't think he handled that poorly so he's not really at fault IMO. These refs hang out after parties when they reflecting on the life or death responsibility they have like a doctor.
