Buster Douglass was actually a very smart fighter; contrary to what some people think.

If there was ever a rematch, Buster Douglass would've beaten Mike Tyson again.

He was so smart and memorable, people can't even spell his last name right anymore. lol
Buster was a known quitter . And in one fight, he put it all together after his mother died. He was a hungry fighter that night .
When he made his money, that all changed .
        Money changes some fighters .
Buster couldn't even defend his title once.
He was the underdog against Holyfield b/c people just knew, he was a dog .
Got beat by Boogeyman for the ESPN belt even.
Didn't show much heart against Tucker.

Yes. Buster Douglas did have problems but when he focused, he was a smart fighter.

Buster skill set with that long jab and his size was tailor made against Mike Tyson.

The way he dominated Mike Tyson in Tokyo, theres not really much of an argument to be made that Mike Tyson would've came back to beat him.

I think that anyone who handled Tyson in the 90s was probably worried about how going into the rematch would affect Tyson psychologically, and went another direction.

Also, Douglas was no-one by the time Mike got out of prison. High risk low reward.
Good memory. Yep this is how I remember it as well.

Douglas caught Mike in his worst shape ever in that fight.
Mike had yes boys as trainers. They had condoms for ice bags. Tyson flew to back to the US only some 3 weeks before the fight . Mike was knocked down by Greg Page in sparring b/c he was so out of shape.
Yet, Tyson knocked Douglas down for some 10 seconds.
Douglas was not any tougher than Razor Ruddock .

Douglas need all that hunger to beat Mike on Mike's worst night .
He was not that hungry ever again. Except on the dinner table .

              He was a one-hit wonder .
Kinda like Rolando Pasqua knocking out Chiquita Gonzales.

There's an excellent book, The Last Great Fight about Tyson and Douglas. It includes before, during and after the fight.

Douglas never wanted to be a boxer though a talented, natural athlete. He tried basketball. Many issues with his boxer Dad who was his first trainer manager.

After the Tyson fight he spent much time flying to both coasts testifying in lawsuits. Weight ballooned after the Tyson fight and he had to lose much weight rapidly before the Holy fight. Got into food and alcohol.

Unlike Tyson and his $300. million earnings and bankruptcy, Douglas kept his wealth and invested and has been a happy man.

Douglas had a great game plan and the great skills to execute it. Book notes that when Tyson did his usual dirty tricks, Douglas followed through on the game plan and elbowed him in the face back. Book states Tyson then stopped throwing elbows. Likewise on hitting during the break. See Douglas give him back on that too instead of being intimidated by Tyson's dirty tactics as many were.

I admire Tyson's incredible speed and power but he usually fought dirty and often was allowed to get away with it.

Douglas was not to be denied on that one glorious night esp. given a corner who didn't even bring an endswell to the fight.

Rematch wouldnt have been any different except Mike Tyson probably gets knocked out quicker; Buster had his number nad if they fought 10 times, Buster wins all 10.

Yeah I know Buster loss the titles with the quickness to Holy, but to this day everyone ONLY talks about Tyson's loss to Buster over any other fighter.

Buster also fought on for another 10 years undefeated after the Holy loss too.
--- No surprise to see ya musta been snoozin'.

Buster had started his well documented prediabetic phase that led to near death after blowing up to 400 lbs.

He made an admirable lifestyle adjustment for a modest comeback against journeymen and smartly quit again after his KO loss.

Might as well asked why Mike didn't fight Ali since there is only 3yrs separating their careers...c'mon now!

Savarese would have KO'd Buster in his prime too then.
