Canelo seemed to tire after round 4. He was still being very elusive and in position to counter, but he was not letting his hands go as much or as sharp. Alvarez was attempting to lure Golovkin to the ropes so he could counter off them as we have seen Canelo do so well in many lf his fights, but Golovkin new better than to try to fight Canelo with his back against the ropes. Notice how Canelo invites GGG to exchange with him, but GGG keeps his distance and instead throws weaker punches just to score until Canelo gets off the ropes again.
Why didn't he bum rush Canelo like he did Brook? He knew he can't match Canelo's speed and would get caught.
Perhaps you got the impression GGG put Canelo against the ropes because you're not used to seeing many fighters fight effectively going back, its not easy, so naturally you assume no fighter would want to fight this way, but if you've seen Canelo fights you know he often purposely walks back to the ropes attempting to bait his opponent to exhange with him to get him with his counters.
Ask yourself, if GGG wanted him against the ropes why wouldn't he do anything once Canelo was there?
In the championship rounds Canelo obviously dug deep and had his second wind taking charge again.
You say Canelo didn't fight his fight in the rematch because Golovkin didn't have his back against the ropes? Putting a fighters back against the ropes is not a scoring criteria. Not every fighter wants to have his opponent with his back against the ring, especially if you're a counter puncher who prefers your opponent to swing big so you can get your counter in.
Canelo kept the fight in the center, where he seemed he wanted it, so he can stay in the pocket but still have a full diameter to use his defense and angles. Its evident in either round 11 or 12 where GGG is in retreat and Canelo motions him to get to the center of the ring so they can engage each other.
Not every fighter, not every pressure fighter, not every power boxer wants his opponents back against the ropes, that's ridiculous to assume a fighter is not in control because the fight never went to the ropes.

He didn't counter Golovkin going back he more or less went straight to the ropes. Why do I think he was forced back. Two things. One. His corner was telling him to stop going there. Two. He was having more success in the center of the ring than along the ropes. So logically he should have stayed there. As far as Canelo boxing beautifully in the first four rounds. Both guys looked like crap in the first round.
he absolutely countered Golovkin off the back foot, ALL NIGHT LONG
and when he attempted to bait Golovkin in by sitting on the ropes, Chickenkin was having none of it
better to do nothing, rather than look like a fool
just like you are better to say nothing, rather than look like a fool

Nel O has proved he can be mentioned in same breath as Ggg now.
If Nell beats bjs and Jacobs he can claim to be best
