It boils down to a culture of brainwashing and being all-too sheep like. If Jim Lampley or Max Kellerman says this guy's the best, he must be. Also, European fighters aren't shown on American TV, so they are non-existant on the radar. Only if a fighter boxes on HBO or Showtime are they any good. Instead of taking the time to research fighters, watch their fights, etc, most American fans buy into the hype around fighters who a network *cough, cough* HBO *cough, cough* has an invested interest in. That an that bogus patriotic, Americans are just tougher and they're horizontal heavyweights, etc, etc.

The former Bloc is about to dominate the big boys for several years, btw.

The only way to judge a figter is to block out your own prejudices and judge them by their performance. I had no idea how good Joe Calzaghe was until he spanked Jeff Lacy's ass for the whole world to see. Now, I know he is a top 5 p4p fighter and feel priveledged to have witnessed such an excellent display of boxing artistry.

There needs to be a Boxing Network. I don't have cable at the moment; but to my knowledge, there is no such channel that covers boxing all over the world. There Needs to be so we can get past this ignorant bias that plagues so many...too many younger fans who don't know how to study and come to their own conclusions without a talking head's assistance.

    There, I'm done.

It's improving lately with a major return to terrestial TV and a new Olympic medallist (Amir Khan) to get behind, but people don't really know the names. Joe Public isn't even that sure who Ricky Hatton is. As for the average UK joe knowing American boxers... no chance.

It's not always been that way, but it's down to two things:

      1. Boxing was largely taken over to minority-exposure Satellite TV.

      2. People just don't give a **** any more.

I dont understand how anyone can deny that Mayweather is an exceptional talent or say that he's fought nobody, like Hatton or Margarito are bigger names than Corrales.

          There, I'm done.

          Brilliant post, K-Dogg.

Actually, I can't believe I left P4P out of my rant. (Oh, I did briefly mention it, but...)

Take Joe Blow. March 24th and he's a nobody in The Ring, with only one Ring writer (the Limey, Claude Abhrams) putting him in his P4P top ten pick. March 26th and he's top ten. What changed? Nothing did. He's still the same man.

It makes me wonder how many good Eastern European heavies are out there, lying undiscovered like Surging Lyncanthropy.

I can't deny that he appears to be an exceptional talent, but you must remember that Corrales was FIVE AND A HALF YEARS AGO.

I seriously think that if Floyd is put in a genuinely competitive match-up he might have got too soft on easy fights. No joke.

so then you should understand if i go to work and ask ppl who Zab Judah is they will think he's a rapper. If i ask Frank Bruno they have no clue ..if i ask about Gatti they think he's a mob boss.....i even had someone tell me that David Tua fights just like Roy Jones

I don’t care what BoxRec might tell you, in terms of TALENT and BOXING ABILITY Bernard Hopkins was NOWHERE NEAR the class of Sugar Ray Robinson.

I’m out, I’m spent. Three things: 1. World love; 2. Don’t bring people’s nationality up in a boxing debate – if nothing else, it’s just downright ****ing RUDE; 3. Don’t believe the hype.

                  Peace.

                  Uhhhhhhh.....whoops. Practice what your preach.

In fact, Oscar is not a "Mexican"- he was born and has lived his life in the US, fought for the US in the Olympics, etc. But WORSE than that is that you seem to use it as a slur in that context, as though the fact that Oscar was both "little" and a "Mexican" lessens Hopkins win over him. And you'd be right about the "little" part.

I'm not really sure about the point of the post. That people are biased towards their countrymen? Not exactly an world-shaking relevation. Next you'll be selling us way out, radical theories like "people are biased towards athletes based on what their skin-color is."

Nah, you took me the wrong way. I used the term "little Mexican" as an affection term for The Acting Amigo. ("My liver really hurts - honestly, Amigo, I'm not lying!")

His nationality is not the issue, though the "little guy" part was.
