Someone translate what Peter Nelson is talking about

That Andre the Giant documentary was a huge hit. That was a project Nelson greenlighted for that one guy, can't remember his name, that came to HBO from ESPN but his show failed.Comment

Now that the deed has been done, I think Dan and many other people are of the opinion that Nelson was promoted to transition HBO out of boxing and into whatever the hell Nelson is saying in the quote from day one. Which is why Dan retweeted that article about Mark Taffet leaving HBO.... the implication is that HBO signaled they were getting out of the boxing game the day they passed up promoting Taffet for Nelson.Am I the only one who's wondering whats up with Fat Dan's angle "Peter Nelson on why he helped kill HBO"?
HBO killed HBO Boxing. HBO has been starving HBO Boxing for twenty f#cking years if you've been paying attention. HBO has cut HBO Boxing's budget by 75%-80% since the late 90's, early 00's by most peoples estimate. Wtf did Nelson do cept give the eulogy at the funeral of the guy who's been getting poisoned for years?
But yea I think Nelson was answering some other question or misunderstood wtf Fat Dan was asking or was offended by Fat Dan's question if he legit asked him why he killed HBO Boxing & Nelson went on a whole tangent about some other sh^t, but I'm having a hard time with Fat Dan's angle to begin with & having a hard time believing Nelson was answering the question Fat Dan is claiming he asked him.Comment

I don't doubt that. I'm sure HBO knew boxing was more then likely gone in x time before Nelson even got his current job. Like I said back then the fact Nelson was the Vice President instead of the President of HBO Sports was a small lil tell I thought. Now that the deed has been done, I think Dan and many other people are of the opinion that Nelson was promoted to transition HBO out of boxing and into whatever the hell Nelson is saying in the quote from day one. This is a thread from 2yrs ago. And there were plenty of threads making these sorta comments & thinking this sorta sh^t. The writing was on the wall. Lotsa cats have been saying that was the case. I'm honestly surprised if Fat Dan is just figuring this out & this might be evidence he is a pheb.

F#ck I'm long winded.Idk about a couple years, but I think so...or lean towards major changes. If you look at everything thats been going with HBO over the years there is a trend thats undeniable. The budget has shrink year after year since the 90's when they had $120M+. Specifically recently, within the last 6mos, there has been an exodus of long term, well respected, high level employees, Ross being one, Mark Taffet who started HBO's PPV arm with Lou DiBella back in the day & even Ken Hershman the President of HBO Sports hung things up despite putting together the P4P top ten list on HBO which to work with. Also of note the head of HBO Boxing is no longer called the President of HBO Sports. Upon Peter Nelson taking the helm they have now deemed him the VP of HBO Sports which suggests perhaps a lesser influence with sports on HBO & perhaps a lesser focus towards boxing specifically although thats something that will be confirmed or denied as time goes on.
HBO Championship Boxing is the longest running show on HBO. They gotta have some loyalty to it beyond just the cash via subscribers it makes HBO, but eventually I can't see HBO not ending or altering this product in a way boxing fans can't even fathom due to HBO's importance to the sport. Whether thats HBO's complete disarmament of boxing or if its something that gets pushed to HBO's PPV arm entirely to try to make it a dollars to dollars business for them or to HBO Latino to focus on the Mexican fans who largely support the sport these days or if its to some yet unforeseen streaming or similar model that goes further down the niche sport rabbit hole that would also represent HBO's outside the box thinking it needs to have to compete with Netflix moving forward who knows, but its for sure coming.
Some part of me thinks it might actually be a good thing for boxing in general.
HBO has had far too much involvement in the sport and the politics as opposed to simply broadcasting, and their coverage of the sport feels old and stale (not that PBC is any better).
Max Kellerman, Jim Lampley don't click with younger audiences and are boring. Face off is so cringe worthy and the Fight game is god awful.I read an article this weekend that really highlighted how little boxing really means to HBO. Most outlets have reported that HBO's boxing budget for the entire calendar year is around $30M, if not even less than that.
Meanwhile HBO sank $30M into the pilot episode of their new show Vinyl alone. And the entire 10-episode order got $100M to work with. The show is pretty much a failure as it hasn't broken 800K viewers in any episode.
As its rock drama underwhelms in the ratings, the premium cable network faces pressure from struggling parent Time Warner, and a recent spate of troubled projects shine a light on a crown jewel at a crossroads.
Where there's smoke, there's fire. HBO Sports is burning.Comment

What a damn **** beater! Anybody else miss the Ross Greenberg days? I do. Eff Peter the Beater1/2: Peter Nelson on why he helped kill HBO #boxing. "Our mission is to use sports as a lens into socio-economic, political & cultural issues. I think humanizing individuals, creating empathy around different communities, allowing that to cross-pollinate for people in a way ....

2/2: "that allows them to contextualize themselves and the world around them. That's at the heart of what we strive to do." Somebody explain that pure gibberish to me please. I have a college degree but I didn't go to Harvard. #boxing

Likely the level of talent, tbh.
If you could've done The Contender with the talent from the WBSS (would likely come off more as Hard Knocks, tbh; still, having the tournament finish up in 10-14 months is key) maybe there'd be enough backstory there for HBO to weave something.Comment
