I don't think this has anything to do with showtime or anything to do with haymon. This is about Netflix and how they shook everything up. It's not that HBO can't compete with other boxing networks it's that they don't even want to compete. They don't think boxing matters to their bottom line. They want to invest their money in movie and tv shows to compete with the real gorilla which is Netflix and other streaming services like them.
Exactly. I remember they did a survey of their subscribers and less than 10% said the main reason for subscribing was boxing. It just wasn't worth it.

Well, I agree that boxing doesn't affect HBO's bottom line and it is more them not wanting to compete than being forced out.
That being said, you could make the same case for Showtime and they are in balls deep.
It's an attitude and HBO has not had a good head for boxing for sometime now. Why else do you sever relations with a man integral to some of the largest grossing PPVs on your network up to that point?
The funny part is they are trying to compete with NetFlix and Amazon just as you say and those services are expanding by doing, among other things, sports!
It benefits boxing fans. Saves them $15 a month, but more importantly, the fewer stables you have, the more likely it is that the best will fight the best.
In sports, monopoly is great for the fan. What basketball fan is wishing the US had four major leagues where the best players were spread across them and never played each other?
The best thing for a US boxing fan is for PBC to dominate, have most of the best fighters, and eventually crown a PBC champion and leave the alphabelts in the dust.
Their current stable can't compete with showtime's or ESPN. They really shot themselves in the foot by banning haymon because he by far has the biggest stable in boxing. Things could be looking a lot differently if they didn't do that.
It's been a tough couple weeks for you Pacquaio/GGG/Kovalev fans.
Your not getting it they were spending less and less money every year for a long time way before haymon. There was time when HBO flag ships were Inside The NFL, Boxing, Real Sex. Did they scrap Inside the NFL because of haymon? No. Did they scrap Real Sex because of Haymon? No. They got rid of Real Sex because of the Internet and Po rn flooded it for free. Today you can access all kinds of Po rn for free so subscribers had no need to pay HBO for soft core Po rn so HBO got rid of it rather then put money into producing Real Sex. They got rid of Inside the NFL because at a time this was ground breaking but today you can find NFL shows and highlights everywhere on different channels and online moments after the games and subscribers didn't need to wait till Wed to see highlights so they stopped putting money into producing Inside The NFL. Look at this quote today
“This is not a subjective decision,” Nelson said in a recent interview. “Our audience research informs us that boxing is no longer a determinant factor for subscribing to HBO.”
This is the comment that matches why they kept investing less money on boxing FOR YEARS and is the quote that should make everyone sad. He is saying that boxing has dropped from the mainstream so much that their research says it only makes up a tiny fraction of their subscribers and is not worth spending on. They battling Netflix and want to put their money and resources in movies and TV like Game of Thrones to compete with them. They simply don't care about boxing has nothing to do with anything else. Their research says their money spent elsewhere affects their bottom line not boxing.
HBO killed HBO! Egos, disrespecting their own American Fighters to lift up Foreign fighters a lot of things just caught up with them call it Karma I guess
