    What ever happened to...?

Just a question from a long time but casual fight fan (I go back to listening to the Thrilla in Manilla on a transistor radio under my pillow when I was supposed to be asleep).

Whatever happened to the ideal that used to rule boxing... I.e. " you got to beat the champ." It used to be that there was no way the challenger was going to get a razor thin decision like the one we saw in Saturday. (I know there were always exceptions to that rule, even back in the day. Is that rule not a thing anymore? And, if not, why?

Its never been a rule, official or unofficial. It was a saying more than anything I'd suggest.

And I think generally the champ wins more fights then the challengers so its a saying that looks like it could be a rule based on that reality. But I mean the champ is usually going to be the more proven better guy just based on the fact he's the guy holding the title. So that being the case he's gonna win more of the fights vs the challengers naturally.

that "rule" doesn't apply when the challenger is a bigger cash cow than the champ, apparently

It went from "you have to beat the champ" to "you have to KO the A side, cause you won't get a decision in Vegas."

            Exactly.

The majority of us again believed GGG won and we even admit it was close. Canelo did a better job but he did not do enough to win. I personally scored the fight 7-5 and that card is pretty synonymous with every other single card from any boxing publication. If the card wasnt for GGG it was a draw card. No one had canelo winning.

Then the frauds come out and claim **** that they know nothing about. It always was and is you need to beat the champ to be the champ. Yes, it's not a "written rule" but tell me, how can you expect someone to come in and just survive and call them the champ? If I survive the fight with canelo then I'm the champ. Is that how that works?

Also, every single boxing trainer will tell you that the jab is the single most important punch inboxing. Establish the jab is literally the first thing you learn. Yet these frauds claim it's not. Then the claim baseless **** like canelo won, despite the fact the didnt judge individual rounds and counted it as a combined performance. Round by round GGG won. Then they claim **** like, look at GGG face. Hell no. Since never has a judging criteria claim face damage as judging criteria. The only aspect where face damage comes into play is fighter safety but GGG and Caleno were both fine.

Then there's the fact that these "fans" are so ******ed they cant even understand their own language. GGG got robbed because Canelo got a decision he did not earn. No, if you claim the fight could have gone either way then you're most definitely implying that it should have been a draw. Yet you are satisfied with one guy winning and not the other despite the fact it could have gone either way?

            These people are "Boxing fans"

That phrase is typically true, but is usually overruled when the challenger is a bigger draw.

I'm not saying any of the judges got it wrong Saturday; I couldn't argue with close scores in an extremely close fight. But Canelo is the bigger draw so he gets the benefit of the doubt. That's the way the cookie crumbles.

It's been replaced by " you gotta knock out the cash cow to get a decision in vegas"

Agree with this^^^ - If you score a fight one round at a time, it should have nothing to do with who is holding what belts...
Regarding both Canelo-GGG fights, I still find it hard to swallow that between the six cards turned in, Golovkin was only ahead on one. Both were GREAT fights, and super-close, but Alvarez definitely seems to get the benefit of the doubt in Las Vegas.
