I don't think Fury was trying to get Pianetta out of there and I do think he was trying some things out in the ring. Im not sure how much he carried him however....I just don't think a stoppage was a priority whatsoever (his fight with Wilder was already signed). He looked rusty and I saw defensive lapses that a fighter more skilled or agressive than Pianetta could have taken advantage of. That's to be expected.
It sounds like Fury reached out to Wilder to make the fight. That tells me a few things; he sees things in Wilder's game that he can exploit and that he probably feels he needs a big fight to truly motivate him and keep on the proper path.
I also think it's interesting to see that there is mutual respect between Wilder and Fury. Even when the theatrics come out when they are together both men dont see to dislike each other. After the fight they we're both smiling when calling each other names and making bold proclamations, they didn't even pretend to take offense to any of the bravado thrown their way.
