Did Wilder's Win Over Ortiz Impress you?

So you agree he did nothing for the first six rounds? I think if you read my post it meant you agree with me that he fought like an idiot then. He could have done better in those six rounds. So yeah he fought like an idiot in those rounds.Comment

No because Wilder should have been stopped in that fight. Old man Ortiz was winning the fight comfortably until he got tired.Comment

Of course!
It’s been slightly overrated since, but it’s a very good win and really legitimises Wilder in my eyes.
Stiverne, let’s face it, no matter how well ranked he was at the time, wasn’t very good. He had a couple semi decent wins over fringe contender Arreola, and that’s it for his whole career. Ortiz at the least has beaten a few fringe guys, plus Tony Thompson and Bryant Jennings which I rate as good wins. Also, just going off eye test, he has really good skill set for a HW and came to win on the night.
Wilder showed he has a chin, he is resilient, and his power carries not just to world level (which was likely but not proven before hand), but also late into the fight. He never lost confidence in his ability to hurt his man even when it seemed he was on the way to losing (**** the scorecards).
That said. A few people have slightly gone overboard. It was a good win at world level, but Ortiz isn’t superman, he was old (and it had started to show in the fight) and he had looked lacklustre in some previous fights post PED bust.
So yeah. Very good win in the current division. A performance which told us a lot about Wilder as a fighter and a man.Comment

Definitely wasn't out on his feet. Sitting on press row, it was very clear most of those punches were grazing and Wilder was still defending himself intelligently. He has a very awkward style and body, so his defense isn't very pretty, just like his offense isn't. At ringside, we thought Ortiz might catch him with something big while he had Wilder hurt, but he never did. Wilder managed to slip enough to stay alive. No competent ref would stop a fight while a fighter is ducking and dodging and smiling.Comment

I would describe it as two fighters scared to engage. Fighting like an idiot would be someone not using their skill and giving an inferior opponent chances by going toe to toe or something. So no, I don't think he fought like an idiot. Just scared.Comment

What has this got to do with the point I was making? Are you saying Wilder hasn't fought bums his whole career? Are you saying other fighters haven't got the same opponent out of there quicker?
At his best, Fury is the better fighter, yes. But Ortiz superior? Get the hell out of here. Parker and Povetkin have done far more than that guy. Plus they would beat him head to head because Ortiz has at most two rounds of stamina. Ortiz hasn't done anything amateur or pro to warrant this kind of reputation. But you lot with your actual bias want to make out the win is much better to make Wilder look good because you're a homer who wants to hype up incompetent fighters. Sorry, but i'm not buying the bull**** you're selling.Last edited by Sid-Knee; 08-18-2018, 01:33 PM.Comment
