It means stats on face value don't mean anything in terms of defining the fighters quality, Stats are only a list of winnings not a whisper of who they beat and what it took to beat them.

We perceive quality, while counting quantity.

And Willie Pep was 229 wins, 11 losses, and 1 draw. So we can't forget him either.
Very true and valid points...but stylistically Robinson was in his own class especially for that era.

In an era where you would fight the same guy 6 times. 19 losses is still 19 losses. That's not a good stat. We're discussing stats

In my experience if you are not properly prepared and your lined with a nothin' burger than you just eat the ****. But if you get lined with a guy who can fight, and you arrive ill prepared for war than it could get ugly in a few rounds, once your gas tank is dry. Robinson was a man of class, in and out of the ring. He was just trying to survive financially at the end. Still, you just gotta love Ray Robinson...…..Rockin'
For sure I agree with you. But this is a discussion about stats. I did not live through his era so I can't really rank him but I respect that most view him as the GOAT
