Comments Thread For: Shavers: I Always Wanted To Fight Joe Frazier, George Foreman

When asked about one of his most memorable fights, a 1979 rematch with Larry Holmes, Earnie Shavers proudly says, "You know, I was champ for five seconds." The now 73-year-old Shavers, who will be inducted into the Nevada Boxing Hall of Fame on August 18, lets out a belly laugh, but everyone watching that fight at Caesars Palace in Las Vegas wouldn't argue with him.

Shavers was a helluva puncher, probably could have beaten Frazier, though I think Foreman would have ko'd him.

This time and directly after was when the HW division was at its peak. Almost all top 15 HWs were known and fought each other multiple times. There was no ducking in these periods. Unlike today where we have two top HWs and the rest are washed up, overweight taxi cab drivers. Pure garbage the HW division has become

I'm old enough to remember Shavers vs both Ali and Holmes.

It was hilarious watching Ali calling Shavers acorn, and he would knock him out of the tree. I thought Ali was funny, but remember my dad hated him with a passion.

Shavers flattened Holmes, and I thought it was over. I was both surprised and impressed when he got up. I don't think Shavers had quite the raw power as Foreman did, but it was up there.

            I wonder who hit harder.
            Shavers or Wilder?

That punch Shavers hit Holmes with was super brutal. IIRC holmes said the shot knocked him out but him hitting the ground woke him up haha.

Arguably the hardest puncher ever according to some of the all time greats.

That's why I love WILDER so much. He fought tomatoes cans and now chases JOSHUA and FURY for big fights to light up HW div.
