Im reminded of a statement Kovalev made; that he would make Ward retire. After their 2nd fight Ward won and retired. Kovalev was quoted saying; i said i would make Ward retire but didnt expect it would happen this way

Left the game too soon. I respect Andre and his decision but, man, a WBSS at 175 with Ward, Bivol, Stevenson, Kov, Beterbiev etc would have been fire. Ahh well, it's still gonna be a blast without him. For me, he still goes into the HoF but he could've went in trailing even more stars (had he scooped the Ali trophy.).

if there had been some big fights left for ward he probably would have stayed....but he went from making like 13-14 million for the kovalev fights...if he stuck around he probably would have had to take a big pay cut again and go back to his barrera/brand type purses....its hard to get motivated to get up for 2 mil a pop again....he probably knew there just werent any good/easy fights to make for good money

I remember Hunter saying years back he firmly believed Ward would someday be crowned heavyweight champ, so there's probably a part of Ward that feels like he didn't fully live up to his potential especially with his inactivity. It was kinda surprising he retired at such a relatively young age-- you'd think he'd want to make up for lost time in addition to collecting a few more paydays.

What, people paid attention to Ward? I guess that's why he could not even sell out his own home town.

He did not have the style to compete at heavyweight. All that wrestling he got away with at 168-175 would of been useless at heavyweight. Tell me, how is he going to out- wrestle a 230-260lb heavyweight?

a lot of guys never started boxing for the money...but when you get to the level ward, and many of the top guys get to, the money becomes a big part of it....golovkin and many guys have said they didn't care about money yet most of their career moves seem to indicate otherwise

like I said....there were probably several real good fights the hardcore fans would love to see...andre vs artur...andre vs bivol...or gvozdyk......but those aren't big money fights for ward......his last two paydays were like 7 and 6.5 million......if he fought on his next fight would have probably been a 2.5 type of payday....at his age, and all the years spent in the gym, its kind of hard to get motivated for that
