The second fight card will include light heavyweight contender Sullivan Barrera on Saturday, Aug. 18. The dates of the remaining three fight nights have not yet been disclosed. Facebook is building on the heels of similar recent rights deals to show weekly MLB games, CrossFit competitions, and other live sports.
“We’re thrilled to team with Golden Boy Promotions to make Facebook a home for championship-caliber boxing this year,” Devi Mahadevia, Facebook’s North America live sports programming lead at Facebook, said in a statement. “Through this unique partnership, a global community of sports fans will have free access to some of boxing’s most exciting live bouts and be able to interact with the action like never before.”
Sounds like Facebook is trying to get into the live sports arena.
Did they make the deal over dinner at Oscar's house??? You couldnt PAY me enough to use Oscar's silverware and kitchen utensils I heard the food smells and tastes like SHT??? J/K
Promotors coming together is always a GOOD thing. And not a bad fight to start out the gate.
I think Oscar is diversifying his portfolio. GBP now has deals in place with HBO, ESPN, Facebook and Estrella TV to showcase his fighters, smart move even though they probably won’t be making much money but it does give dates for his fighters.
Actually Oscar bought Estrella TV back in 2012, if memory serves me well, I remember when GBP announced it. The first thing Oscar mention was to use it as a platform for his upcoming/and growing stable.
Oscar is doing great things for boxing. I hope he continue to expand his brand to new audiences.
Why? FB already has billions of content makers for free and this deal isn't bringing any new users.
Also, notice that the two Promoters invloved have an extremely shallow pool of talent and probably aren't getting any type of site fees for the vast majority of their fighters. Meaning this is their best method of broadcast. I mean, I guess this keeps people from Tweeting during the fight, but Idk any other real advantages for FB. Who knows, maybe they are trying to stick their feet in the live television market
Do you understand the meaning of partnering with other entity? Companies do not do business to lose money but to make money, GBP has done great things with HBO, ESPN, Their UTube live with Beto Duran and Douglass Fisher, Ring Megazine, Estrella tv which he owns, etc etc with his supposed "Shallow Pool" of fighters, I bet you anything there are many other Companies that would love to give their fighters such a big platform and array of opportunities for them to fight but they can't.
Facebook will pay a rights fee estimated to be $250,000 to $1 million per event, according to sources. It is comparable to what HBO or Showtime would pay to secure a night of fights on their premium channels.
