Was the 164 offer really that bad?

Lot of good points been made here on both sides.
Everyone knows the 154-168 was a propaganda stunt to gain exposure. He'd had a very hard time getting fights for 5+ years & just got his HBO deal so Sanchez was trying to create some buzz around him. Guess what, it worked. Team Golovkin would still decide who/when/how to manage each individual fight through negotiations. It doesn't mean he'd fight anyone at their weight, it means he'd negotiate with any of them & depending on the reward would determine the concessions.
It's pretty simple, Golovkin wasn't offering to go to 168 for just anyone (the same with 154), only the biggest payday's & they said he wouldn't stay there, but would return to 160.
The point is that numerous times Golovkin has tried to negotiate fights with the top performers. Why did Cotto fight Martinez at 159 but only GGG at 155? Why did Canelo fight Chavez at 164.5 but GGG only at 155? Why did Cotto get 55% but GGG only got 30%? Negotiations aren't copy & paste. Ward wanted the advantages while not giving up anything. If he wanted 50/50 split, well then he'd have to give up some pounds.

ward fought at 168 at the time, but GGG wanted to fight him at 164. how does that not make sense? if a 168 fighter is too big then GGG shouldnt say he will fight ANYONE from 154-168.
how is that not clear? stop trying to justify for GGG.

I'm a big GGG fan, I defended him fighting Vanes FFS, but it was a blatant duck... and they were right to do it, because fighting Ward at 168 would have been really ******. They also ducked ****ing Sergio Mora around that time period too.
K2 constantly saying everyone was ducking GGG was a ****** marketing strategy that blew up in their faces. Live and learn.

Also GGG fans: Danny Jacobs was a cruiserweight in the ring. It was unfair

Originally posted by Gate keeper View PostWrong, the offer was 164 for 50-50, not in general. Ward was a pain to deal with in negotiations and wanted more than K2 felt he was worth. We've seen and heard the same thing when Kathy Duva was dealing with him for Kovalev. So they then said if he wants 50-50, then it needs be at 164, meeting in the middle in purse and weight. Eventually K2 moved on to Lemueix and then Ward started making more noise about it, when it was too late. Even knowing it was too late, he agreed to the offer but wanted it about a year in advance around the same time he'd be fighting the Canelo/Cotton winner. I don't know think K2 was super anxious for than fight, but I don't think Ward was either.
