Comments Thread For: Loeffler: 'Structure in Place' for Canelo-Golovkin Rematch Deal

NEWARK, New Jersey Tom Loeffler spoke optimistically Tuesday about the likelihood of finalizing a deal soon for a Gennady Golovkin-Canelo Alvarez rematch. Golovkin's promoter told BoxingScene.com that there's a "structure in place" for an agreement. If the deal is consummated, Mexico's Alvarez and Kazakhstan's Golovkin are expected to fight again in an HBO Pay-Per-View main event September 15 at T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas.

it seems very strange to me that Canelo

    a) got a 1 year suspension cut in half (reason: due to cooperation with the investigation). The bare minimum you'd expect a suspect to do is cooperate in the investigation, right? Also suspension decreases hardly ever occur (as quoted by NSAC Bob Bennett) Only when mitigative circumstances can be provided, a suspect can be eligible for a decrease in suspension (but very unlikely) So why is it in Canelo's case, that cooperation in an investigation is considered a mitigating circumstance?

    b) got a six-month ban retroactive to the date of his first failed test and not from the date of temporary suspension. That's like having a murder case, where the suspect gets arrested 10 years after the murder took place and gets sentenced to 15 years in jail, and has to serve just 5 years.

Having said that - I think it's best to get this rematch over and done with quickly.

to be fair, I can't disagree with any of that

what if the IBF want to contractually obligate the winner to fight Derevy, and Canelo does not agree?

Then if GGG loses he probably keeps the belt. As long as he agrees. Or they make it vacant and have Sergiy/ ggg fight for it.

They can't do that. That would be a pretty dope solution to allowing GGG to keep this belt while fighting Canelo though. Only thing is, if Canelo wins, he will drop the IBF belt. There's no way in hell he'd fight Sergiy. Way too much of a low reward high risk situation. (Of course Im just guessing though. He just hasnt shown signs of involving himself in those kinds of fights in the last 4 or 5yrs).
