  • Comments Thread For: Promoter: If Usyk is Injured, I'd Love Briedis To Face Gassiev

As BoxingScene.com has reported on several occasions, the highly celebrated World Boxing Super Series tournament could very well be receiving a rabbit punch by the fallout of George Groves, who was scheduled to take part in the finals of the super middleweight version of the series.

Glowacki should be the substitute. Glowacki should have been in the tourny from the start and Briedis is terrible to watch fight.

I thought they already had fighters ready to replace the injured ones at the beginning of the tournement??? Well that sucks that the finals are gonna be fought by replacement and not by the ones that actually got there... thought they had plenty of time to heal...

If Usyk is injured Briedis deserves the fight. His fight with Usyk was very close.
But Eubank Jr. definitely doesn’t deserve the fight against Smith.

No words how bummed out I will be if this is how these tournaments end up after having very entertaining, well organized matches all this time. The loss of the tournament in the super middleweight is bad. The loss of Gassiev/Usyk is freaking tragic. Hopefully, these still can happen. All these men have earned it.

As for substitutes, each final could do worse than picking a semi-finalist that fought decently. Bringing in a completely new name that had zero to do with the tournaments would be a bigger stain on the process. Having a substitute from outside the 8 for a semi-final is fine, but for the finals? Would rather see them pick one of the two that came up just short.

So how does that work then if Briedis were to somehow defeat Gassiev in the final?? A fighter who lost in the semis is the tournament champ?

I don't believe Usky is injured for a second! this 'injury' comes at the most convenient time after Oleksandar protested in fighting in Russia -- its a clear duck. I like to remind the Usyk fans that Yuneir Dorticos went to unify against Gassiev in his backyard.

Sure, but Dorticos wasn't from a country with an ongoing armed conflict with Russians. Plus Usyk had an agreement it would be in SA and a fighter shouldn't be forced to agree to different terms/location change to 1000s of miles away once a deal is finalised. Also he didn't need to fake an injury because he outright stated he wasn't going to fight in Russia, no reason to try and trick anyone when you're consistently upfront about things. Usyk went to previous opponent's countries to fight, his passport has seen more action than most boxers.
