The closest fight you get with similar circumstances like a lackluster late replacement opponent and garbage undercard is Wilders fight with Stiverne II.
Wilder was supposed to face Ortiz, but Stiverne replaced him due to Ortiz failing a drug test. No one wanted to see Wilder facing Stiverne again. So pretty similar, right?
That fight had an average viewership of 824,000 and peaked at 887,000 and that's the number you should compare GGGs latest number to.
You can only do your comparison with the Ortiz numbers, if you think there is no change in viewership when dudes are facing tougher and more dangerous opponents. But do you really think that if GGG faces Derevyanchenko, Charlo, Saunders or Jacobs on regular HBO, that he wont get an significant increase in viewerships?
1,3mio seems to be his ceiling against lame opponents. The last fight on regular HBO before the martirosyan fight was against Wade and he did similar numbers.Last edited by asgarth; 05-08-2018, 12:06 PM.

GGG outdoing the US heavyweight champion of the world...for now!
Once Wilder knocks out Joshua, there won't be any competition!
But good for Golovkin, hope he fights Charlo or Jacobs nrxt!

Ggg is a ratings machine. He’s done these types of numbers when off ppv. Look at wade Rubio etc ratings.Originally posted by Butch.McRae View PostLol Game of Thrones has nothing to do with it? Sure buddy. I subscribe to both as well. I'm also positive I know more about this stuff than you.
Original content is much more important than boxing to both networks. Which is reflected in their budgets.
I'm not saying that GGG doesn't have followership. However, in considering the numbers from this weekend, we have to take into consideration 1) Many fans were already expecting a fight on May 5 involving GGG 2) HBO provided a free preview over this past weekend allowing anyone with cable to watch HBO programming.

are you mentally ill?
what are you arguing here? GGG did better numbers than Wilder with a full promotion against a better more known opponent. This is a fact.
HBO has 30% more subscribers than Showtime, so proportionally, a similarly-watched Golovkin fight should do at least 30% more viewership on HBO than Wilder on Showtime.
It's also worth noting that the Wilder fight went head-to-head against NBA (Celtics-Rockets), UFC 222 and HBO boxing (Kovalev), while the Golovkin fight had NO competition from NBA, boxing or MMA. BIG difference.
