Kovalev is a mentally fragile on-top fighter. Joe is all wrong for him.

Kovalev knocks him out in 5, if they fought 10 times Joe would lose all 10 times.

You need an elite defense, durability, or at least clean counter punching to defeat Kovalev, Joe has none of that. This is an absolute nightmare match up.

Clevelry was much more durable than Joe, possessed a very high work rate too but was utterly demolished by Kovalev.

Calzaghe never fought any true power punchers throughout his career, at least nobody quality. He doesn't have a single win over anybody with a KO ratio above 70% and that's at SMW, forget LHW, forget Kovalev.

Calzaghe was a master in disguise
His only downfall was him not crossing the pond earlier
By no fault of his own ( ask a prime B- Hop{one of my favs } or RJJ why they never called him out

i think Calzaghe stops him just from the output and pressure. Kovalev couldn't keep up with the pace

I think a lot of people underrate JC. It's good to see that people in this thread are giving him his due.

However, I think that some are now underrating Kovalev. According to most people (myself included) Kovalev beat a prime Ward in their first fight, despite Ward being incredibly dirty. People predicted he might win by knock out, being the harder puncher, but he didn't. He won by being more skilled.

He outboxed the guy that many people had rated as the #1 boxer on the planet.

JC's endless stamina would have helped him, and particularly Joe's iron chin would have made Kovalev's night difficult. I would probably lean towards Joe being the favourite. But dismissing Kovalev as not being a live contender would be a mistake.

IMO this is a bit more difficult to pick than everyone's making out. I still think Calzaghe's the favourite, but when are we taking his prime to be? If it's between Lacy and Kessler, which I think is reasonable, then the issue is that Calzaghe had issues even then with Kessler, who had solid fundamentals and decent power. Bhop and Jones are excellent (if aged) fighters, but they were different stylistic challenges, and I just think Kovalev would have the ability to walk down Calzaghe, as well as landing on him due to his technical solidity, making it a much closer fight than everyone's posting. Calzaghe by close UD, IF he's not KO'd in mid-rounds

Calzaghe if he doesn't get caught and he has the boxing ability to avoid that. Calzaghe by late stoppage or UD.
