Michael Spinks cancelled a LHW title defense against Eddie Gregory because Gregory (or maybe his name was Mustafa Muhammad at that point) was overweight and would shed the remaining lbs. That meant obvious losses for venue, television etc. Shortly thereafter the weigh-in procedure was changed.

    That's how I recall it.

Hurd came in under the ten-pound limit.

that size advantage was meaningless? did you see how much bigger he was and how it affected the fight? how he walked right through shots, towered over lara and was too tall and strong to get clinched, how he hurt lara with a left hook without a ton on it?

what's more important than fight night weights are how they got there! lara could have campaigned at 147 early in his career, his managers used to talk about it. hurd is 26, almost 10 years younger than lara, and makes 154 lbs by the grace of god! he will not be at 154 lbs in his mid 30's like lara, trust me! he'll be lucky to still be a middleweight if he is boxing at all!

those fight night weights can be very decieving. that fight is a perfect example. they were "unofficially" 1 lb apart. did that look like a guy who had a 1 lb advantage in size, or a SMW fighting a 154 lber?

if lara wore boots or shoes, a jacket, and hurd wore sneakers and athletic wear on the scale they could be 5 lbs apart and still be "unofficially," only an lb apart.

and FFS just look at the two guys and tell me they're the same size with a straight face! lara is not a big 154 lber! he's been there for 5-10 years! hurd is absolutely f#cking enormous! he sheds a ton of weight in camp to get down to 154 lbs, and he will not do it forever!

          the answer is money.

they weigh in on friday to make a full weekend out of an event that takes place on saturday. people buy an extra room, eat dinner, and most importantly, go to the tables and lose.

Because boxing is corrupt as hell, same day weigh in's WITH a hydration requirement would fix MANY of these bs weight issues....

Can't make weight AND keep hydrated, you should not be fighting in the division.

Facts no one can tell me Hurd was only a pound heavier; he throws pitty pat shots as if he knows he 20-30 pounds heavier and they will eventually take their toll

yea...not only that but the day before weigh in began being used as a promotional tool. I don't see it going back to same day.
