Very interesting video. Paulie explaining - and Broner demonstrating - how not to use the shoulder roll defence, then Floyd proving it does work, if you do it right. -
Paulie always gives a visual when he gets into one of these discussions and I think that is a good thing. If people just took a minute to look at the angles, it would tell them what they need to know.
In this tape it shows that depending on where you are to the guy, you can make the movement smaller,or bigger... you can turn, or you can drop. Bronner initially gets caught all over the place, and then repositions and has more success, and I don't think he understands why! Paulie explained it though.
The other thing to keep in mind is that distance is constantly changing and Floyd is much more relaxed at the waist than Bronner. Bronner is too tight at the waist to use this technique properly at the distances he chooses to use it. We use the shoulder roll in martial arts a lot actually. You can do it standing forward with a roll of the waist under certain conditions.Comment

It's not just Broner, seen lots of people do it wrong. You can't just sit there in it, because after a couple of punches the opponent will zero in and find his range, Floyd learned from years of practice when to change it up, when to change the look.
Fact of the matter is Floyd more or less perfected a lot of that technique already as a child, and it's easier to learn it then because you don't pay such a heavy price for the mistakes. He learned what to do and what not do, and the repition of different scenarios started to become muscle memory over time.Comment

First of all it is suppose to be used when your opponent is at Close Range. Mayweather and James Toney used it on the inside or when they was Trapped against the Ropes not when their opponent have space to come over the top of that Shoulder Roll

When Mayweather and James Toney use it their feet are PLANTED ready to roll and counter.
This ***ing guy Broner tries to use it going backwards and off of his backfoot and he clearly doesn't have the Reflexes or timing for it so he needs to stop using him all together.

Those photos are excellent demonstrations. Yes the feet have to be planted well said. No position lasts forever, they are not magical, this has to be told to aspiring martial artists as well. One can watch Tyson who learned from Dempsey, pivoting around a person for a step to catch the person's weak side and this can be done with a shoulder roll where there is no responsive action to the initial attack.First of all it is suppose to be used when your opponent is at Close Range. Toney is insanely good at this: he always finds a great angle to counter from when he deflects with a roll. Mayweather does more things with the movements...some I like some not so much, but that is me LOL.
I would just point out for technical points: If you look at Mayweather in these Giffs, watch his angle to the punch...it is very important. That shoulder at the correct angle protects the jaw and the punch cannot do anything but slide by the extended shoulder. Bronner has no concept of the vertical movement done to accomplish this. he only moves horizontally so he punch does not slide over. Toney is more subtle but does the movement properly.Comment
