Would fans care so much if these B-sides just do what they're supposed to do? No.

Why do fans care so much about PPV sales, splits, purses??

Those things started mattering a lot less to the boxing community when 97G tried headlining a PPV and it flopped hard. Didn't even make money.

It goes much further than splits. Fans really, really want the best things to happen to their favourite fighters.
Seriously.
If Wilder loses (or AJ for that matter), his fan boys will be VERY SAD. Similarly, if he wins, they'll be ecstatic. These people might pretend to just want to watch a boxing match, but don't be fooled. They are cheering for the personal, financial and athletic well-being of their favourite fighter.
Why do they care? I doubt anyone here can answer that with expertise. But humans love tribalism, and fandom doesn't seem so different. Sometimes it's based on nationalism or racism or character differences or fighting styles. But the end result is the same: an absolute buy-in on one particular person.
And I'm no different. I'm a fan of Daniel Jacobs. If he were to lose to Sulecki -- yeah, that'd bum me. But we all have to take a deep breath and just admit that we're bizarre in that aspect.Last edited by rolshans; 04-02-2018, 11:27 AM.

It's all about money. The fight is secondary to most fighters.

The same reason fans of other sports care about the salary cap and how much money their team has available to spend to get players.
Promoters can't be trusted and will lie about the financials in order not to make a fight.
An informed boxing fan is a good boxing fan

Problem is not all promoters/managers/advisors/networks are accessible to what fans or the media wants to know. You won't see any negotiation detail when it comes to PBC/Showtime, for example. Yet look at the amount of detail we get when it comes to Arum, Hearn, HBO, etc.
Just recently, we learned about why the Andrade vs Derevychenko failed to make it this year. You won't hear or read anything like that when it comes to PBC or Showtime.

In contrast, we knew something about the Walters vs Loma, Rigo vs Loma, etc.

It's the Mayweather phenomenon. Back when he was using PPV numbers as one of his endless excuses to duck Pac during his prime he claimed Manny's PPV numbers weren't big enough, even though he was fighting guys who had absolutely no PPV numbers to speak of.
