you can trademark anything but it has limits to what that trademark pertains too.

You can have "left Hook" trade mark for boxing gloves that doesnt mean everything is off limits from "left hook" just means direct markets etc cant use it, a company cant come out and make "left hooks" boxing shoes cause it too close in relations that the consumer can confuse the two as two different brands but say "left hook" cat food will be ok.

It's called a trademark. If authorized by the trademarking folks, you can purchase rights to certain combination of words. If he has the compound left hook trademarked, he's owns the rights. What don't you get?

Sky Sports has trademarks over the word Sky. They own it.
