Does the fact that he used it as an alias give him the right to trademark the punch ? Or can he trademark any punch, eg 'uppercut'. Or must it be a combination of words, such as left hook, right hook, left uppercut, right uppercut, left jab, right jab, left cross, right cross etc ?

If you got enough money you can buy all sorts of stuff. As previously mentioned Sky Sports bought Sky. I think that cost a pretty penny. If you can by Sky, you can buy Left Hook.
Apple provides a list on their site on all of their trademarks:
https://www.apple.com/legal/intellec...pletmlist.html
There are a lot of common words ^ there.
It appears they own the word Apple. That doesn't mean people can't say the word or etc, but when making a brand, you're going to have problems. Like I said with Sky, Apple is a common word.
If Jeff Lacy owns a trademark for the compound Left Hook that would be very very smart of him and his team. I'll be following this one out of pure curiosity.Last edited by McNulty; 03-30-2018, 05:31 PM.

It feels more like misuse of the trademark concept, and I hope the court asks for proof of pecuniary loss through the drinks company using the name, and throws it out if there is none.
eg. if a software company were to use the term 'cocoa' related to something that competed or leveraged off of products that Apple produced (Apple having this trademarked), then I can see Apple being able to sue, but if its a err, cocoa product for a nice hot bedtime drink, hopefully the court would throw that out too.Last edited by angkag; 03-30-2018, 06:30 PM.

Apple can do whatever they want in your example. You can either pay a licensing fee with Apple which I think is most common or get sued --- eventually.
I don't think it has anything to do with the type of business. You own the word it's that simple. Com*****g has nothing to do with cocoa, know what I mean?
When you own something like that, it eventually comes down to how much money do you want to spend on lawyers to recoup damages.
Boxingscene for instance. I'm going to guess they have that trademarked. If I start a business that sells boxes for moving and I call it Boxing Scene, my lawyer is going to get a call from this site looking to for us to cease and disest. If I refuse, the necessary paperwork will get filled out and we'll have our day in court. I would probably lose.

You can have "left Hook" trade mark for boxing gloves that doesnt mean everything is off limits from "left hook" just means direct markets etc cant use it, a company cant come out and make "left hooks" boxing shoes cause it too close in relations that the consumer can confuse the two as two different brands but say "left hook" cat food will be ok.
Ita a tricky lane for sure.
Now how close is sports drink to left hook as a moniker for a boxer???? its a stretch but hey why not try it if you in desperate need of cash.
