This is the 1st thing I ever agreed with Eddie on... Wilder should be making double the money and much more popular.. This kid has it but isn't getting marketed the right way...
Wow! Those comments were incendiary at best. Perhaps it was just rhetoric to help hype the fight. However, anytime you use race it's always controversial. Next time, if I was advising Wilder I would ask him to choose a much better choice of words.
The only problem i have with this is that while Hearn says Wilder should be making loads more money....hes the one saying Wilder isnt worth the money and should take the super small split when it comes to fighting Joshua. If you pay the man what hes worth...then he might start to listen to what you say.
To be fair, Hearn's job is to get the best deal for AJ and it's up to Wilder's promoters to push back.
Wilder makes less money and probably pays a higher percentage to his white promoter, how is that a better situation?
Yes, Wilder does make less money because he took a slower pace going up the ranks being that he won a bronze medal in the Olympics and also being from the U.S. while doing so. Traditionally, americans don't tend to rush any of their medalists after turning professional and let's be honest, boxing isn't anywhere near as popular as a sport here in the US as it is in the UK. The UK tend to rush the stands for their olympic medalists no matter what. If Joshua was from the US do you think that he would be as well known as he is now? Look at FMJ, it took him 10 years to start gaining steam and when he finally did he was cast as a villain. Once most superstar African American boxers get their popularity they often leave their promoters (often white promoters) to go a different route. As far as the percentage that wilder makes, I'm not sure but no matter what it is I'm sure Joshua gets paid more. Sometimes you have to swallow your pride (and keep it to yourself) before you can break free.
