Ah, Roy Jones was my favorite boxer when I first got into the sport...

    Undeniable talent...

These fighters come around once in a blue moon...and IMHO....Mayweather is that type of fighter also...

Complete package that makes it seem like they're completly unbeatable..

Hopkins, Ali and even James Toney are examples of guys who have evolved there technical skills when they saw that they could no longer win fights based on there pure superior talent.

For this reason I think its hard to gauge where Roy will stand on all-time list.

I agree that Jones incredible talent did manage to come back & bite him in the ass....at the end.
But, ****, he was untouchable for what seemed like forever.

If you're referring to posts on this forum and others, or sentiments of people on the internet:

You'd more than likely read statements like that.

Primarily because most of the kids on these forums first saw Roy fight against Tarver.

They don't know, and have no clue of, how dominant he was.

They just don't have a grasp because they didin't watch him fight, and saw him get knocked out when he was washed up.

That's common. So then comes the: LOOK WHAT TARVER DID TO ROY OMG LOLZ!!!!111 NO WONDER ROY WAS DUCKING DM, HE WOULD HAVE GOT KTFO LOZRS!.

I've had it with the eigth graders hating on Roy.

I'm glad atleast Diego isn't coming in here and whining and complaining about Roy Jones this Roy Jones that. I really don't think Tarver was that much better than Jones. I'll repeat myself again and it probably wont be the last time, but when Tarver knocked out Jones I looked at it like a lucky punch..I mean he had his eyes closed..

To me he's alot more talented and his more of the instincts than Toney. On my score card he won every single round against Toney when they fought. Jones is one of the craftiest fighters i've ever seen with how he boxed Toney, when he did the chicken move and Toney mocked him and got caught with all those hooks and knocked down.

Be sure to make the distinction between Gifted and Talented.

Roy obviously was the most gifted figher of all time maybe.....but I do think he was more talented than Toney.

He was a quick, lethal counterpuncher.

^ Oh man, i've noticed that a lot on these forums...

It's the same as me telling my father that Leonard was garbage because he lost to Terry Norris ( hypothetical, didn't happen)...

I wasn't around for Leonards greatness and no matter how many vids I might have watched on ESPN classic, I don't truely know his dominance throughout his career...

I was around and watching the sport since Jones made his first impact...

a 16-17 year old kid will judge Roy on his fight w/ Johnson & Tarver...If you're around 24 and up then you judge Roy based on his destruction of everyone from his middleweight days on up...

I agree, he was able to do things that I have never thought could be done versus TOP NOTCH competition. He was truly untouchable and people forget how powerful Roy was at 160 and 168lbs, his KO % at 168lbs is over 90%.

Yes, I believe he had much more raw physical talent than James Toney. James Toney however is one of the slickest most fundamentally sound fighters I have ever seen. Even with his added girth and fighting predominantly flat foot he is STILL extremely hard to hit flush. JT defensive skills, counters and close in fighting is beautiful to behold, pure and simple. This is especially true when he was at the lower weights and was not so flat footed and had better waist movement.
