Only problem with your theory that debunks it is. AJ after he dropped Wlad gassed himself trying to finish Wlad, and needed a round or two to recuperate! So if it was Ortiz’s age, why did AJ need to recuperate? The truth is the size of most HW is why they require more time. Ortiz would have recuperated eventually, Wilder just recuperated faster do to a few reasons age though somewhat of a factor is the least of those factors!

I think Ortiz would have won that fight if it had been even 2 years ago- and a different ref may have just given him the TKO in round 7.
That said- I think we learned that Wilder has a real chin. Ortiz has monster power and he nailed Deontay twice in that trouble round and Wilder stayed upright (as close of a close-call as possible though).
The same things that makes Wilder an exciting fighter to watch was also on display while he was badly hurt.
I say that because his unorthodox offense can at times just look like a genuine lack of fundamentals, and I think how he acted while hurt in round 7 confirms that theory.
After he was hurt he wasn't able to tie up Ortiz and then he kept moving back and giving Ortiz the right distance to keep throwing big shots and Wilder seemed more than a bit lost. Obviously he hasn't been in that situation so can't fault him too hard- but he didn't seem to have any kind of "survival mode" that he could go into. No hardcore Wilder fan out there can say they didn't feel their stomach drop during that display.
Sorry for the weak pun, but Wilder truly is wild. It's also why he is super fun to watch. Because he can literally knock out anybody and all he has to do is keep trying for it.
Really fun fight. Reminded me of Joshua v. Klitschko a little bit, but it wasn't quite on that FOTY level.Comment

Either these guys are drinking or watching clips bc on what planet did Ortiz need to recuperate besides rnd 6, which was still practically even? It was Wilder leaning over the ropes at times taking deep breaths and thats bc he was sustaining more damage !
Age didnt play a part as much as inactivity in relevant fights, talk of Ortiz being done is once again comical bc theres NOTHING to suggest it . If anything he will be sharper next time ,he will easily have a handful of fights IF he has the desire which if hes asking for a rematch ,how is he done ? lol This forum sometimes !Last edited by juggernaut666; 03-07-2018, 01:01 PM.Comment

take away the late shot after the bell in the 9th and the illegal rabbit punch to the head that first dropped ortiz in the 10th and what are you left with?
A one dimensional fighter who gets always with some BS cos he's the champion.
Sure Ortiz was gassed because he's old and heavy but windmill wasnt looking that flash either. He was petty much out on his legs.
BUT he certainly can't claim the excuse of being old and heavy. So id say conditioning.
Windmill doesn't train to go 12 rounds cos he never believes the fight will go the distance.
First half decent boxer to take windmill the distance should win, but probably won't because of the same dodgy scoring that had wilder ahead at 9 rounds.Comment

What ever the reason, be it mental or physical, Ortiz was unable to follow up and take advantage of rocking Wilder. He did greatly outbox Wilder, exposing Wilder's weakness. Even with the KO, I saw the fight as Ortiz's loss more than Wilder's win.Comment

When you lose that much weight you lose all your durability and strength to combat the super heavies. It is a must to be at least 230lbs at minimum to compete among the elites in this era.Comment

Wilder proved once and for all that he can take an ass whooping. No one could ever question the size of his balls again. Ortiz beat him up even though he won the fight.
He ate some huge shots from "The Real King Kong" and was still coming back out for some more. He was so poised and calm. This man has tremendous self-confidence.
So if anybody now wants to know whether or not Wilder can take a punch, all they need to do is go back and review the tape of last Saturday night's fight to find the answer.Comment

Okay, I’m going to have to rant, you’re probably right to skip this post and read the next one ;0)
Some of you guys are a promoters dream. Ortiz is not 38, let’s think about that for a second, let’s say he’s 42-45 (and be kind), which boxer in the history of the sport could seriously be considered world class HW at this age? Wlad isn’t even that old and most say he’s washed up, Foreman was picked up one slice of a title from a starved of talent division, but let’s be fair he’s 1. A freak and 2. in most people’s top 25 of best all time HW lists.
Now let’s take into account Ortiz hasn’t really fought anyone before Wilder. In his 40s and still had ‘potential’. Bemoan his lack of promotion, that he’s ‘feared’ or ‘geared’ and it’s all got in his way, his record is pretty much trash.
Ortiz has been sold as feared, dangerous, a monster ‘king kong’ it’s all just marketing and everyone lapped it up because they want Wilder to finally prove himself. The sad truth is, Wilder is desperately in need of credibility after 40 f’in fights! I don’t dislike him, I really don’t but he has to beat AJ for me to believe in him cos whilst he got a good win, for me it was promotional BS, Ortiz is not that special and he is old.
With Wilder what irks me is simply this, he isn’t a good boxer. That right hand veils a litany of poor boxing form and boxing decisions and because I love the sport, I want him to be found out. Let’s be clear, not because I dislike him, because I love the sport, because I believe boxing technicians win in the end and he isn’t one.Comment
