Comments Thread For: De La Hoya To Wilder: I'll Get You Real Money, Make You a PPV Star

After he won the belt 3 years ago he made 1.4M and all these years later he is barely making more then that? If he signed with Golden Boy, Hearn, Top Rank he would be cashing bigger checks and fighting on PPV by now.
Not a lot of fighters out there that make 2 million. Isn’t that more than Lomachenko and he’s a p4p fighter?

Oscar hasn't made any fighter any money yet. Canelo was already getting it, and most hardcore fans cant name 7 of his fighters off the top of the head. Ive yet to hear him mention any fighter of his' name on any major broadcast outside of Canelo. Dude needs to take a hike

Canelo wasn't making money until he signed with Golden Boy 8 years ago at age 19. Since then his paydays have increased exponentially every year as a pro and made over 50M his last fight. Golden Boy took Canelo from prospect, to world champ, to P4P ranked, to the biggest draw in boxing today. Wilder's payday have been damn near the same as it was 3 years ago. Golden Boy lost a bunch of fighters in the Haymon divorce. But look where those fighters are at now and where Canelo was at 3 years ago. He was making about what Wilder is making now for his fights with Angulo and Lara. Now look at his paydays. Canelo made the right decision staying with Golden Boy and Wilder would be a PPV star if he stayed with Golden Boy or signed with a major promoter.

Why didn’t anyone invest in him before this? Now that he has done it himself why would he need a promoter?

Heavyweights do. History doesn't have many examples of featherweights drawing big purses. You look at what Klitchko was making and what Fury got, and what Joshua is making compare that to Wilder's career payday and you see how badly he is underpaid. Comparing him to weight classes that are traditionally not paid highly makes no sense. Little guys have to move up at least to welterweight to cross over to the really big bucks.

Oh lordie, Haymon will now respond by bribing Wilder $3.5 mil, just like he did with Spence and Mickey.
