What a damn good fight Wilder-Ortiz was

Fight of the year so far.

I was behind Wilder coming into the fight, but part of me wanted Ortiz to pull it off, especially after coming back from a knockdown himself.

We all know Wilder is sloppy and limited while his power was the game changer. But we didn't know Wilder had a good chin and he came in undersized at only 217 or whatever. Wilder also has heart, most importantly. That uppercut at the end was amazing.

Respect to both men. They were both fighting for their daughters.

Wilder knows what his strengths and best chance to win is and he goes for it, you can't hate him for that. He will never be a pure boxer so there is no point in trying to be a heavyweight Floyd! We give him props for doing what he does best, going for the KO

yeah haha,thats what i thought all goes out the window when it comes to wilder, these guys suddenly love the KO punchers. i remember that was the 'go to' line when hating on golovkin ad kovalev, 'hes too crude, prefer technical fighters' then when it comes to wilder 'pure power, great action'

Meh, it was alright. If Wilder wasnt ***ing Ortiz up (outside of rd 8) it was an occasional punch, mainly posturing affair.

that article just says about complaints about medical care after the event and that fight sounds like it was a gruelling beating rather than a big shot and a fighter being wobbled. from memory (i was tired and it was 4am over here) he was checking whether the ring was wet and **** like that too lol, it looked like stalling tactics to me.

what happened in the fight that caused the lawsuit isn't the issue, the issue is that the state of new york had to pay $22 million and now there is pressure on the commission to take every extra precaution possible.

which is why in recent new york fights we've had doctors demanding to check a fighter at the start of a round before he walks out. why the refs stall after a knockdown to ask the fighter a million times if they want to continue. they were even making them walk right, walk left, walk forward for a while, but it was getting so ridiculous that they at least toned that down.

point being, both fighters benefited from new york's new safety paranoia. wilder got the extra time before the 8th when the doctor demanded to check him and ortiz got extra time after the knockdowns.

Outside of Ortiz ring generalship there was little to no skill on display. Wild, sloppy punches. One guy old and gassed, the other highly overrated and outside of his size and power has very little else to offer. I've seen my share of "damn good fights" and this wasn't one of them. To each their own.

Eh, I think it's kinda dumb to put on this fight expecting a high level of skill to be on display. If that's what you need in every single fight, why even watch Wilder at all? You already know in advance that he's not that fighter.

Part of why I enjoy boxing is because of the variety. It would be boring to me personally if every fight was Wilder-Ortiz. And it would be boring if every fight was Mayweather or Loma or whoever putting on a boxing clinic.

Tell that to his die hard fans. Talking about Wilder like he is the GOAT HW. Wilder himself perpetuating that nonsense. If a fighter is going to talk big, he should be more than just a one-trick pony. Wilder invites this sort of criticism by running his mouth so much. I could accept this fight for what it is, three decent rounds of sporadic action between two guys who would never have even ranked in the top ten 15 years ago.
