Not quite unknown... but until June 2012 he was prohibited from fighting in the US and was, yes, essentially unknown to the mainstream even if he was known as something as a dangerman within the boxing community. Even by 2014 he was still building his profile and since the Cotto vs Maravilla had been mooted as far back as Oct 2013 and solidified by December that year (https://www.fightsaga.com/news/item/...tto-next-fight) when Golovkin was still fighting the likes of Stevens, why on earth would Maravilla consider him a necessary opponent?

Sure it's a fight I would have loved to have seen, but a duck? Not in my world, man, though I know there's folk who like to play fast and loose with the term.

In my world the only legitimate use of the term 'ducking' is when a champion refuses to face his mandatory, and even then I wouldn't consider it such if a fighter neglected his mandatory to pursue a more lucrative opponent. The term gets banded around on here by folk far too often, man, don't add to their number.

Let's suppose GGG doesn't fight Charlo in 2018 or 2019. Would you consider it a duck?

Like I say I'd be extremely unlikely to use the term anyway, but if Jermall becomes and remains mandatory and if Golovkin is not either a) unifying or b) fighting someone who brings in a significantly higher payday/public interest or c) moving up to SMW, then yeah, that would satisfy my criteria.

i cant think of a single guy at 168 right now id rather see golovkin fight than charlo

im with you for the most part though...if he fights canelo, saunders and jacobs and never fights charlo i cant consider it a duck

but if he fights canelo and saunders this year and continues on fighting and avoids jacobs and charlo after that id say theres a duck going on

theres really no 168 business that needs to be done unless him and jacobs decide 168 would better suit them both for a rematch

When Canelo wins the straps. The WBC goes to Charlo, even as tempting it would be for Alvarez to unify all the belts with Saunders, he won’t acknowledge the fat slob in Suleiman. This means GGG can win back the belt against Charlo before Shield’s continues to accumulate the Texan at 160. I don’t see GBP giving Golovkin another shot unless the metrics are tremendous in the rematch and it goes 12.

Golovkin by that time, after this rematch, K2 can afford to pay Traux or another’s name from the winner of the WBSS.

Well neither can I, particularly - Benavidez, Zurdo or Groves perhaps, but that ain't really the point. I was just clarifying the exact specifics of what I would call a 'duck' (although I just think it's a **** term anyway). I know there's folk who would say that moving up (or down) a division when there's an opponent people think is a threat would trigger the 'duck' response but that's up to them.

I dislike people using the term about any fighter - especially since there's basically no consistency or intellectual honesty about the way people use it, but there's fuck all I can do about what other people do. I can however come up with what I consider a sensible definition and do my best to apply it impartially whether it's a fighter I like or ain't so keen on, so that's what I attempt to do.
