Comments Thread For: James Toney: I Would Have Knocked Bernard Hopkins Out!

In this post-modern boxing age of old-school, new-school, never-went-to-school James Toney (77-10-3, 47 KOs) is patronised in some quarters as a fat guy who could do a few shoulder rolls. Yes, and Joe Louis was a short guy who could punch a little bit. In a single year, 1991, Toney arguably achieved more at middleweight than Bernard Hopkins achieved in the years in which he allowed inertia to creep in after the triumph of his win over Felix Trinidad.

I was at the Toney-Nunn fight in a AAA baseball diamond in Davenport Iowa. What a great fight it was! Toney was the beginning of the end for Nunns career. Met Angelo Dundee as well. What a trainer! Toney is definitely one of the GOAT. Another fighter whose achievements eclipse Mayweather's. Many people on this site became fans of boxing because of Mayweather and know very little about the Greats and future GOATs in the 80's and 90's. Nunn was exceptional but Toney blew him out of his shoes. Unfortunately, Toney just like RJJ stayed too long. You need to look past that and look at what he did and how he did it.

I agree i feel Toney would beat Hopkins. Hopkins gets hit easy and Toney can fight very well on the inside.

"Everyone wants to be a rapper, a movie star or a TV star today, they want to be known for something else and not for being a fighter.”

I can agree with that BUT there's no way he would've knocked out Hopkins.

Truth. People need to keep in mind the prime years and the past-prime / retirement years where fighters stick around for some extra dough / love of the sport.

No such thing as ruining your legacy, your legacy is your legacy, nothing can take away from your past accomplishments / achievements.

Would had been an interesting fight. But could Toney beat GGG or Kelly Pavlik?

Without a doubt in my mind he would beat both fighters.

No way does he KO Bhop, he had a granite chin and was one of the wiliest boxers around, Toney has nothing good to say about any boxer btw except RJJ who beat him....such a sour puss and never accepted defeat like a man. Dont get me wrong I like the guy but outside the ring he's really a bitter creep.

A ko over bhop wouldn't have been likely but let's not act like it would've been impossible for Toney to do so. We're talking about a guy who stopped an undefeated Michael Nunn, Iran Barkley, jirov and holyfield. Those are weight classes from mw to hw. He would've had a chance at the lo, especially since he never liked Hopkins, he would've been motivated for that fight and motivation was toneys biggest obstacle.
