but if you wanna see them be active then stop ****ting on an opponent just because u never heard of him.

lets say spence beats danny, thurman and porter in one year. yeah thats great but.. now what? move up to 154? what "big name" is there?

u gotta space these fights out.

floyd said it best in his documentary. when he turned pro he wanted a title shot in his debut and wanted to beat every body with a name immediately. but soon realized its also a business and entertainment. whats so entertaining about a boxer with no opponents left to challenge him?

more activity means a whole bunch of ocampo's. hungry young mofos that want the top spot but only problem is being unknown.

do ppl think all 200+ opponents on sugar ray robinsons resume were elite? hell a whole bunch of em were probably less skilled than ocampo. theres a ton of goat herders on JJC's resume too. but thats wtf u get with "activity". in today's era at the top level it takes time to build a fight and theres way more money on the table now which makes fighting a bunch of times unnecessary.

and how df is peterson a "bum". I'm sure danny garcia would disagree with that and danny is in the top tier at 147.
Preach! This will seat Spence up for 3 - 4 fights in a calendar year (at least 16 months). Its a good thing. The kid was one fight away from fighting him anyway. Its not all that bad. Some people are confused, just looking for anything to hate on.

This keeps Spence's name floating, provides more press, allows him to stay sharp, and builds his following (his social media jumped about 20k followers on IG this weekend). It also exposes the sport (US audience) to a young kid who has some solid skills. He's a Latino, with solid power, and is only 23. He could be a player down the line (as long as its not too bad for him).

I've been looking at other publications. It seems like he has some love. I expect them to pull a solid crowd in Texas.

If Haymon wanted to he could make Spence vs Danny, Spence vs Porter, Spence vs Thurman, ect. Spence has no control over fights with Top Rank and other promoter fighters because politics and networks are real road blocks. But what point is being with Haymon if you can't have access to his top fighters? Most of which are fighting only once a year anyway. Hate on Arum all you want but he makes his top guys all fight each other you will get a round robin of Crawford, Horn, Pac with rematches and probably trilogies. Where there is a strong chance that Spence isn't allowed to fight any of the top guys under Haymon in 2018, just like he didn't in 2017 or 2016. Haymon will sacrifice guys he don't care about like Peterson but it looks like Haymon is scared that Spence will ruin his other guys so he's not making those fights. I don't for 1 moment think the fighters are scared.
Haymon is not a promoter; he's a manager/advisor for the fighters that he works with.

The current pecking order, as I see it, is Thurman at #1, Spence at #2, Garcia at #3, Vargas/Khan at #4, Porter/Peterson at #5, and then the rest (Figueroa Jr depending on the weight he wants to fight at, Collazo, Berto, Broner depending on the weight he wants to fight at Jamal James, Bryant Perrela, and the other prospects/aging fighters looking to re-establish themselves).

Thurman gets the first call and picks his fight (with the pick choosing to either fight or not fight him), Spence gets the second call, Danny gets the third call, Khan gets the 4th call, Porter gets the 5th call.

Fighters split up the money, hire a respected promoter to stage the fight, and the fight gets put on.

Spence heads to FOX May/June in Dallas (I doubt that Showtime sees value in paying for Spence-Ocampo, even with Spence being a budding star), Ortiz-Alexander and Ugas-Robinson still happens (both fights are on separate cards on the same day), and you have Spence's third fight of the year set in case Thurman chooses to fight Porter instead (with Ortiz-Alexander winner vs Ugas-Robinson winner serving as the chief support to Spence's Dallas show).

Not a bad consolation package, if things play out this way
This is another great post. But I think Showtime will pick up the Ocampo fight too. I think they plan to build around him going forward. That attendance number was very surprising I'm sure.

If Spence just fought Danny or Porter and then fought a bum mandatory nobody would care. But you sit 8 months on the shelf not fighting and fight a bum and now you going to fight a bum mandatory probably in the next 4-6 months. That's at minimum 12-14 months without a real fight. And that's if there is no delays in making his next fight. We were told last year he would be back in Fall, then it was pushed back to Nov/Dec then finally pushed to Jan 2018. So there is no guarantee he makes 2 more fights in 2018 not after looking at a lot of Haymon fighters who are inactive in 2017 including Spence. If he were an older fighter or huge PPV draw I could understand 1 or 2 fights a year but he's still a young fighter developing and trying to build a fanbase should be doing both fighting more active and stepping up the competition. And it's not like he doesn't have opponents in his promotional/network stable that's what's frustrating. The fighters are there why are these guys either sitting on the sidelines or fighting bums?
In what world is Lamont Peterson a bum, lol? Spence's performance was stellar, but you couldn't honestly say that there were a consensus 10 welterweight fighters who were better than Lamont Peterson when the fight was announced. Revisionist history is ridiculous here.

Ocampo hasn't shown anything yet (I doubt that anyone's really seen him fight yet, tbh), but it's still a fight, and doing the fight now clears Spence's year of any other obligations.

Everyone is beefing bc Spence should do this or that.. active with a can... or inactivity, when we should be frustrated at the damn IBF! Look at those rankings. No disrespect but how many of the top 15 IBF rankings have we even heard of? I can’t even fathom where they developed their rankings from. For real doe!!!!

Seen three of his fights on a youtube channel called "Central Boxing". He has some talent. Still wanted to see the Ponomarev fight though.

Thurman doesn't want it, Garcia is just coming back and doesn't want it, Porter has made it utterly clear in public that he doesn't want it, Amir Khan doesn't even want to whisper the man's name, and then you're to maybe Jessie Vargas (who'd likely take the fight, but has a possible Spence offer weighed against a Thurman offer).

Point to any other welterweight that you could definitely say is better than Lamont Peterson.

                    • Its whatever as long as they make the fight with a quickness and get it over with.
